512 megs of ram is more than enough. If possible, I would try to go lower and buy my own RAM but there's not option for that on the 8400. The x300 video card just came out from ATI for the PCI-Xpress slot. I haven't read up on benchmarks tho.

i can't image spending that much on a computer, you can make 2 good systems for $1000, or 3 ok systems for that much $

I just saw a thread that said it's about a 9200.:brokenheart:

As far as ram... 512 is'nt enough for farcry. I'm using 650 right now with only browser, a 80 MB OS and FC in background.

BEst game since Half Life IMHO... You start cranking resources up and it will slow $2000 systems to a crawl... Your only hope is a $500 graphics card, A64 perferably OCed, and 1024 MB of ram.:)

This is a really good one.
And yet you praised the other system which also had 512MB of ram.

ATI Radeon x300

Tomato - keep in mind there are 3 sub-systems in every home computer and the whole system is only as fast as it's slowest part.

1: CPU & memory
2: Video
3: Mass Storage

Really fast memory do nothing for you if the CPU & motherboard cannot use it.

If you are using 650MB right now with just your OS & Browser running you have so seriuos problems with TSR(s) and services on your system.

I have WinXP Pro SP1, (4) IE6 browsers open, calculator, ZoneAlarm, MSN Messanger, Word2003, Outlook2003, and I am only using 173MB of my 512MB and the swap file is unused.

You can get about any computer that would play games just fine for $1k. Just go to Dell.com and buy one. they have tons. a 4600 is less than that. Might need to up the video card but it's still less than $1k.

Get yourself a cheap case, a shuttle nforce2 mobo, a mobile athlonXP, 512mb of pc3200 ram, and a radeon 9600 and whatever else you can afford. Don't go the A64 route just yet since theres really no point to it.

Now open up Far Cry (what Zebo has open) and tell me how much memory you're using :)
