Definitely not the best of ALL time, but

Empire (early-to-mid 1970s) on mainframes (pre MicroSoft, pre Apple II, pre Sid Meier)

was the best of its days (the only competition could have been Rogue several years later). I remember playing it on a VAX with CVS OS. I don't know who had compiled the source code for our VAX or even where our version came from, but I still thank the system admins and my software engineer friends.

Empire was the predecessor and major influence for games like Civilization and all other games of that genre. I suppose there had to have been board game versions that pre-dated even the mainframes, but I am too lazy to google for their existance.

Totally agreed. I want my lost hours back from that game!!

I voted Starcraft:Brood War though. Although it may not be the best game (according to the poll it is 😛) but the best RTS period. Its still going strong after 10 or so years.

Maybe i shouldve voted doom, where it all began..
