Im looking to find a prog that can compress files. Ive heard of some such as netzip, and winrar but i was wondering which is the best. Best being the one that has the better compression and also in features. In particular, im looking to compress mp3, mpg, etc multimedia files in general. Thanks.

I use WinACE.

It support all the major file compression types, it doesn't get in the way, a good little program.

rars are usually used in warez because of the easy ability to take a whole bunch of files, compress them into one file, then have that one compressed file split up into many many smaller pieces.

.zip files are probably the most popular.

And you would get _horrible_ compression with and multimedia files. They are already highly compressed so compressing again will get you nowhere. You might save a couple megs tho...

There was this website by someone that did a comparison between zip and rar....not sure who ...been a long time..anyways in conclusion, the guy stated that Rar has a longer compressing time but does compress a bit more. For every day uses, zip should do, if you really want a small file rar all the way.

From my experience, ZIP provides fastest compression w/lowest compression, ACE provides best compression w/slowest speed, RAR falls in between.

don't waste your time trying to compress mpg, mp3, or most types of multimedia files. You'll hardly save any disk space since those files are already extremely compressed in their normal state.
