Best commercially available non-prescription cough suppressant?

Srsly. If you know about the extra good, can only get it on the second Tuesday of every other month during a leap year... I need it. I'm about to cough up a lung, and I'd probably go for a temporary tracheotomy if somebody told me it would help.

Thanks in advance, as always.

Robotussin DM (spelling I know)

Make sure it's DM. If it's regular, it doesn't suppress cough, just loosens up phlegm (spelling again)

+1, just bought some myself.

... the Tussin? For true? Perfect. If I can keep this cough in check long enough to drive somewhere, I can go pick some up.

Again, this is why I love ATOT. There's basically always somebody online willing to answer a completely arbitrary question on less than a minute's notice.

Theres also a chance that someone will derail your thread or commence a good thrashing of your intelligence and lack of general knowledge.

I also prefer the tussin, but I also like the constant drinking of hot tea with real honey.

There is also that. ATOT keeps you on your toes.

I'll try to not go overboard with the stuff.

I'm assuming you have a non productive cough, and therefore need to supress it.

BTW, I get paid to know this 😛

I thought someone was going to say Buckley's. I've taken Robitussin for the longest time and didn't really calm me down until I switched to Buckley's. But Buckley's taste like vomit. Blech.

Is that the one where their commercials actually make fun of how bad it tastes?

"In the United States, codeine is regulated by the Controlled Substances Act. It is a Schedule II controlled substance for pain-relief products containing codeine alone or more than 90 mg per dosage unit. In combination with aspirin or acetaminophen (paracetamol/Tylenol) it is listed as Schedule III or V, depending on formula. Preparations for cough or diarrhea containing small amounts of codeine in combination with two or more other active ingredients are Schedule V in the US, and may be dispensed in amounts up to 4 fl. oz. per 48 hours without a prescription. Schedule V specifically consigns the product to state and local regulation beyond certain required record-keeping requirements (a dispensary log must be maintained for two years in a ledger from which pages cannot easily be removed and/or a pre-numbered and the pharmacist must ask for a picture ID such as a driving licence) and also which maintain controlled substances in the closed system at the root of the régime intended by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 -- e.g. the codeine in these products was a Schedule II substance when the company making the Schedule V product acquired it for mixing up the end product. In locales where dilute codeine preparations are non-prescription, anywhere from very few to perhaps a moderate percentage of pharmacists will sell these preparations without a prescription. However, many states have their own laws that do require a prescription for Schedule V drugs."

According to Wiki certian meds containing Codiene may be able to be purchased without a prescriptoin... depending on your state laws. That's probably the 'best' cough medicine, but chances are teh Robotussin will do fine for you. Just throwing this out there too. 🙂

If by non-productive you mean a fuckton of coughing with no phlegm to show for it, then that sure is the case. I'm going to acquire some of the 'tussin shortly, and give that a spin. If it doesn't do it for me, I'll step up to this Delsym of which you speak.

Better watch out how much you take. Tussin and Delsym are BOTH DM, taking some Tussin here and Delsym there will get you high (7 to 50 times the recommended dose, according to Wikipedia).

Cough supressanst don't work. But if you have an irritated throat, something like cloraseptic can help. Not much point to using cough suppressants anyway, if you don't cough it up, it will build up in your lungs. That can be dangerous.

DM works for me really well at night, because when I'm lying down trying to sleep, the cough loves to come back then. So I down 2 TB (or whatever it is) and it always has worked for me.

There's nothing to cough up, that's the problem. I'm coughing my esophagus raw and I'm not even coming up with anything to spit. If I was clearing phlegm, I wouldn't have a problem.

I've picked up a persistent cough somewhat less than once a year for the past few years. The first time, I coughed myself hoarse and required codeine and a few days to recuperate. The major problem that caused it to persist was overnight throat dryness and irritation from nasal congestion and mouth breathing. The most recent time, I used an OTC cough suppressant and a chest rub (CVS's version of Vicks).

Scotch.

Put a cube of ice in a shot glass, and drink a double shot on ice. If you're still coughing after that, put another cube in and another double shot. If that still doesn't work, forget the ice cube and just drink the Scotch until you're not really sure what it was you were trying to cure.
