Best codec pack?

Hi all,
After a recent reinstall I can't see video in Winamp. I forget which codecs I had installed on my old system but have heard that some can be nasty. Which ones are recommended?

In all honesty, all I've ever needed is WMP, Quicktime, Real Alternative, DivX and XviD

I use DefilerPak, but the only part that is really important is ffdshow. Quicktime Alt, Real Alt, Media Player Classic, and ffdshow. Those 4 things and you are basically set.

I used to use the Klite Codec Pack, but i realized i don't need it.

All i use is the XviD codec now...

I would never ever install a codec pack, but that's just me, there have been too many that have bad codecs in them.

If you're only viewing, not encoding, there are just two that I would install, divx3 (there's an audio codec in there that you can't find elsewhere) - and ffdshow. Those two cover 99.99% of all that's out there (excluding quicktime & real player, of course) - and you get much better performance with ffdshow than the official divx codecs (well, unless the newest divx codecs have changed that, I don't know).

Yes its just something about Klite MEGA Pack that makes me not want it near my system. 🙂

I used to use K-Lite, and have nothing against it.

There's one silly reason why I do not recommend it generically when these threads come up, and that's because of an apparent hijack of a once legitimate link for it a while back. This probably means nothing at present, but it tainted my confidence in recommending it at large. Both packs have worked fine for me.

Whichever one you use, the Community pack that I linked is worth checking out. It too is an ffdshow solution, and there is a lot of good info on that wiki, regardless of which you use.

i also use the nimo codec pack, and thats worked well for me.
