Can anyone explain to me why these are so costly? I was just browsing some sites, and those that had them on sale were pushing for the 300-500 dollar range.

AFIAK, nixie tubes died pretty quickly after the advent of the seven segment LED, so no significant number of new ones has been produced in the west since ~1975 and in the USSR since ~1985
