Um... really? I ran WoW just fine on my backup PC, which has a Sempron 3400+ in a 780g motherboard with only 1GB of RAM (cobbled together out of spare parts). Sure, It ran at 1680x1050 with mostly low settings and no AA, but it was smooth.

wow was always a ram hog. i started off with 512mb, then upgraded to 1gb and could tell a huge jump, then went from 1gb to two and could see another. things tended to load faster and play smoother

you can spend $80 and get an HD38xx series AGP card which would be pretty good with 512MB RAM

just upgraded to an FX5200? wait what year is this?

upgrade = replaced dead radeon card
in this instance...

Forgive my noobish-ness...please be gentle.

I'm a bit confused, though....your friend is looking to play WOW?

And he's having trouble affording a $50 video card?

Doesn't WOW take $12-$15 (USD) per month to play? That's $144 - $180 per year in game fees.

Would something like Guild Wars work better (free per month after buying the software)?

I'm not a WOW player and I don't know what your friend likes playing....but this scenario doesn't seem to make financial sense.
