TY has switched to a twist in spindle - no more screwing, at least for fujis
yah, I noticed this. Memorex has had the twist spindle for their 100 packs of TY CD-r's for a while but just recently all the memorex and fuji 50-packs that are TY have gone to the twist spindle as well. No longer can you identify a ty from a long distance away. The very best way to tell is to look above the UPC bar code, usually there they have the made in location and if it is japan grab it, anything else, dump it. Well, there is one exception, verbatim (sp?) cd-r's say "made in tawain" on them but they are still good cd-r's as they are the previously mention mitubishi chemical made and are top notch.
Something to note is that not all TY made cd-r's are made equal. While all are very high quality and will hold data for a long time, not all have the best thickness. If you notice a Sony or HP branded TY cd-r is a bit heavier than a TY brand memorex or fuji. It is because the top layer is a bit thicker and so will resist scratching better. Now, to put this in context, I have tried to scrap a fuji's top layer "simulating" very rough normal use and have so far had no luck, so if you have fuji's don't worry about it. I just figured I had to flaunt this otherwise useless knowledge so that I can convince my friends that I am not a complete waste of space.

Hope that helps

P.S. if I babbled too much and lost you just do what everyone else said: Buy Fuji, Verbatim, or Made in Japan Memorex cd-r's and you will be fine.
