Best CD-ROM Drive for EAC

CotswoldCS

Senior member
I use EAC for CD Ripping (If you don't know what EAC is please don't reply to this) and am looking at replacing my ATAPI IDE CD-ROM drive. The drives I am considering include:

AOpen 56X Retail (956E Pro)
Asustek 52X Retail (CD-S520)
Samsung 52X OEM (SC-152)
Lite-ON 52X Retail (LTN-526)

Does anyone know if these drives support Accurate Stream and Drive Caching???

The price of these drives is very similar and I really am only going to use it for CD Ripping. I used to have a link to a internet database of tested CD-ROM drives but it has now disappeared. Anyone have another link that works?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Go here for in-depth CDR reviews. This site is widely accepted as being one of the top review sites for CDRs.

You mention ripping, and the Liteon LTD-163 is one of the fastest rippers out there. I have this drive and can only say excellent things about it. It is not the quietest drive out there, but it's mighty fast AND accurate. I have ripped hundreds of CDs, using EAC, with it and it reads even the most scratched ones easily.

Check out the site in detail. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck. 🙂

Thanks for the Link MichaelD. Unfortunately they only reviewed one of the four drives I am looking at and there was no information about compatability with EAC (Acc Stream, Cache etc)

Does your Lite-on have Acc. Stream and no caching???

So far, I think it's between the Lite-On 52X and 56X AOpen

I'm not sure about the cache size, but I think it's 2mb. I know the LTD163 is compatible...I use EAC several times a week and it works great.

Just found a great site here

Makes interesting reading. I think I will go for the Asus after all. Amazing how much variation there is. I'm surethe LiteON LTD163 is a great drive (ranked 5) but the CD-ROM version comes in at 27 on the list.

I dont think he meant the CDROM version.... he meant DVD... cause why not? It reads CDs and DVDs and rips faster for all of $9 more....

Sorry, not quite with you Dulanic. I'm not sure that all DVDs are necessarily faster than CD-ROMs. My Pioneer DVD is really slow compared to my Mirai CD-RW. However, would consider a DVD drive (despite them being nearly twice the cost here in UK). I hear that the LiteON LTN-163 is one of the best, but the LTN-165 is the only drive available here in the UK. What is the difference between the 163 and 165???

Anyone own a LiteON LTN-165????

Keep it going - I'm learning lots!!
