My burner died. What's the best one to get as far as speed and reliability? Probably for under $150.00

I think speed differences between 32x and higher are pretty nominal (we're talking seconds to a minute .. not worth worrying about IMHO.)

People have had a lot of good things to say about Lite-on and LGe recently. I own an aging LGe (16x) and have burnt hundreds of CDs without problems and it continues to run like a champ. I got a good deal on newegg.com for a Lite-on 40x for my mom a short while ago and was very pleased with it as well. So these are the two brands I would recommend.

Both offer buffer undrerrun protection (which is pretty much standard and a must nowadays) and can be found for cheap.

I was going to wait about a year for the DVD burning technoligy to get better.
Do you think it's there already?

yamaha is good, but I'd go for Lite-On. Cheap and fast.

DVD burners are nice to have if you need to backup anything larger than a CD can hold. Good for video files if you do any editing for your family or what not.

that burner is nice but I don't see how they can justify charging twice as muc for burning text on cd. It's a cool but uneccessary feature imo. The lite-on doesn't have 8mb buffer...but with your budget, you can have just about the best cd burners out there, so anyone that you like is fine I think.

However, if I were you, I would save that money and put it in another upgrade.

prolly. I think with the current burning modes, Zone CLV and CAV (constant angular velocity), are hitting it's max. According to this article.

I hope they start cranking out some DVD burners. All will profit.

I bought a new lg 40x burner, and, like the at shop i bought it from, they said the days of plextor being the best burner is over.
I have never had one wrong burn, and its extremely fast. In my eyes, there is not one single wrong thing to point out. I bought it retail for around 80us$ in Norway, and i was amazed at getting that quality at that price.
Its a sure shot. I also have heard good things about lite-on as well.

I'd say with that cash, you can get a Plex 48x or the Yamaha 44x, both are great reliable quality drives. If you were in a budget of less then a hundred i'd recommend the LiteOn.

LiteOn...cheap, reliable, fast. They also make the drives for many if not most of the other companies.

Yea, once burners start hitting sub 100 I'm on a DVD Burner.

By then I also expect a clear winner to be announced inthe +r/ -r and +rw/-rw races.

+r and +rw are in the same camp. same with -r and -rw. however, it looks like +rw is going to win, if for no other reason than because ALL of the computer companies are backing it.

back to cdrws... the yamaha is a sweet burner for quality burns, audio burning/audio extraction, & cdrw performance. unfortunately, the t@2 feature is the most often cited and least useful. recent deals have had it for around $60 (iirc), the lowest on pricewatch is $75 shipped for a refurb, but new for $90. it all depends on what you'll use it for, though. if you want more info on cd burners in general, go to cdrlabs.com
