Best career mode in a console racer

It's getting harder and harder for me to go back to TDU; I think I'm done with that game. It was fun while it lasted.

I'm looking for a racing game that has a deep career mode. Anything that plays on Xbox 360 or PS3 is fine. I don't care how old it is.

As a matter of fact, I would prefer something used.

Any type of racing is ok as long as the physics aren't total crap.

Any suggestions? I've always raced on consoles instead of PC, but I guess if there's a better PC option I would check it out.

Forza 2 obviously comes to mind. $20, the best physics there are, and insanely deep career mode.

Forza 2 actually came with my 360. It's a fun game but I kind of already played that one to death.

Good call, though.

Ok... then Forza 3 on 10/27. Or PGR. Or GT. Shift, which was just released, has a pretty good career mode. Demo is coming out this week, if I'm not mistaken (as is Forza 3's).

any particular type of racing? as in, are you looking for pro stuff only, or would a street racing game interest you?

Burnout Paradise is fun and is $20 or less from most places. Very much worth the money. Of course, it's very, very arcadey?the physics are unrealistic to the extreme and most of the racing events encourage you to smash and destroy your opponents. But it's fun. There's also a big variety of racing and free-roam stuff to do.

Any type of racing is good for me as long as the physics are fun. I've never owned a street racing game and I'm definitely intrigued.

I'm just looking for something thats not race-by-race or a bland tree-like progression (like Hot Pursuit 2 for Xbox, which I hated).

I might have to check that out.

Seconded. I'd actually rate it as one of my most favorite racing games of all time, they really nailed it.

$20? I paid $5 for a copy for a friend probably 5 months ago.

If you want more of a "sim" racer look at Need for Speed: Shift or Forza Motorsport 3 (I think Forza has alot more replayability). Gran Turismo 5 would also be a good bet but I'm not sure when it's coming out.

If you want to try offroad go with DiRT 2.

If arcadey is what you want then, as mentioned, Burnout: Paradise is the way to go. I had Burnout for a while but what seems contrary to the majority of people I just couldn't get into it. The best part is the free-roaming nature.

Forza 3's demo comes out in 3 days, why not give it a try before making your decision? I don't think Shift has a demo, Burnout and DiRT might. Try all the demos you can, they're free and will give you an idea of what the game plays like.

I just assumed demos don't give a great indication of career-type modes; they just show the racing engine.

That's why I was hoping for input from people who like deep career modes and have a favorite game of that nature.

Yeah, I'm much more into the multiplayer modes. But if you hate the driving in the game you're not going to enjoy the career.

Grid has an alright career. Also the Pro Race Driver series (At least I think that's what it's called in the US since it had so many names) has an interesting plot-based career mode. Of course the driving model sucks, but you know.

The Race Driver series by Codemasters was originally called TOCA Race Driver, in the US at least, and went through three versions of that before changing its name to "Race Driver: GRID." It has the same driving model as Dirt, which is a continuation of the Colin McRae Rally series by the same developer.

I remember playing TOCA Race Driver 2 on the original Xbox and being mostly unimpressed... the difficulty was absolutely punishing. I tried the GRID demo as well and although the graphics were stunning and there were some innovative features, I just couldn't get used to the physics.
