Best card for system

I have an ASUS a8n32sli premium with a A64-4000 and 2gig of memory I now have a 7800GT and want to up grade the card....what should I purchase? I do believe it should be a DX10 card but have not kept up on them as of late.

you might want to upgrade your cpu to dual-core since most games coming out are multi-threaded.

Depends on what you want to play and resolution. Coming from a 7800gt though you probably want 8800gts minimum.

If you don't want to spend a lot, get the 8800GTS 320MB version like i have. It's about twice as fast as your current card.

And like the other poster said, a dual-core cpu will bring added power to the newer games as well.

But definitely do the video card first as it's much more important than the cpu in games.

Probably, but since you can no longer find them, you'd have to do some searching. If i were you i'd pick this up:

$69 for the AMD X2 4200+ 939 processor is a nice cheap upgrade for your system. The cpu is 200MHz slower than your cpu (2.2GHz) but the extra core will give you a huge boost in the newer multi-threaded games.

The X2 4200+ and an X1950PRO will be a good upgrade. The 8800GTS will be bottlenecked, so you won't be able to get full performance out of it unless you buy a faster AM2 processor and mobo.

I play mostly Racing sims and a couple of FPS, CSS HL2 . what performance would I see for this upgrade. would it be worth the money or do a complete mobo processor vid upgrade? And I stay far away from OCing anything...🙂

You're working with Socket 939 which is still great by most standards but getting difficult to maintain because of the lower availability of DDR RAM and Socket 939 CPUs. An upgrade to AM2 or Socket T would allow you to use DDR2 (or even DDR3, if you choose a P35-based board) and give you a much wider choice of processors available. It would cost a lot more than the video card upgrade though. The X1950PRO would give you about a 10-15FPS increase in all the games you play, so it'd be a very noticeable difference. The 8800GTS is another story altogether but only go for that if you're going to upgrade soon, since you wouldn't be getting the full performance benefit of buying an 8800 series card.

P35-based board for Intel Core 2 Duo right?

Since you have 2gb of ram, and that processor is only $70 I would get that and have another year/two out of it. That is just me though. The 4200 would be good for an 8800gts too. For those that say otherwise: here

Not much at higher resolutions in current games.

Just keep in mind that the newer games like Crysis will probably demand a quad core CPU to really shine. That and a better graphics card. 🙂

Really the 320mb GTS is a pretty good match for your CPU, especially if you can overclock. It's dual core right?

A64 4000+ skt 939 is single core 2.4 ghz. OC it to 2.6/2.8 and get a nice vid card. I would recommend the 2900 pro over the 8800 gts 320 unless you have a marginal psu.

Don't bother going dual core since most current games will see MUCH more improvement from the vid card. Also, dual core cpus run much hotter and the second core is rarely if ever used. If you end up getting bottlenecked in a year or two then you can go dual core or do a total system rebuild, but until then just stand pat. None of the games that you mentioned require a dual core cpu to run well. If you find a game that you really like and you find that your single core cpu is bottlenecking you in the future then you can mess with an upgrade then, just factor the $70 or so for a new cpu into your price for that particular game.

btw, crysis is supposed to be able to take advantage of extra cores ala supreme commander, but it is highly unlikely that it will scale all that well. iirc, supcom runs better on an e6850 than a Q6600.
