Looking at:

6800 GT, Ultra, and Ultra OC (BFG)

X850 XT (not PE) and X800 XL

All within my budget. System is
3200+ winchester
DFI Lan party Ultra-D
2x1024 Patriot Ram

I'm not interested in the driver issues EQ2 has with nVidia cards. Looking for recommendations. I put the X800 XL up there if the difference between the X850 XT is small.

Thanks in advance.

The difference between the x850XT and x800XL are a bit bigger than you think, the x800XL is a budget x800 with good performance, but the x850XT is their best. I personally have an x850XT PE, purchased it in December, I've loved it.

I ran balanced setting on a 6600GT, sempron 3100+, 512mb ram. You could run High Quality or Very High Quality with a 6800GT and your setup no problem. Don't just set it to a specific setting. Set it to HQ or VHQ then do some tweaking with the clip plane, shader distance, etc. You can get extremely nice looks with a little tweaking here and there.

I would get ATI. The 6800s seem to have a problem with EQ2 for some reason (older nvidia cards like the 5900s run just fine). My 9800Pro ran better than the 6800GT in EQ2. Supposedly nvidia will have a fix for this in the next driver release, and if you visit the EQ2 technical forum, there are some solutions people are having some success with. I don't have the 6800 any longer, so i haven't had a chance to test it, but i should have my laptop next week, and it'll have a 6800U in it, so i'll be trying some of the solutions.
