Im looking at upgrading my graphics card and was wondering which one would let me max out all settings on any modern games at 1680x1050. Im currently looking at the 4870 1GB, 4870 x2, and 260 216. Was thinking the 4870x2 would be the sure thing and with the ebay cashback i could get it for little under 400 which isn't to bad. Any suggestions or links to deals on any of these cards would be nice, thank you.

My current specs are as followed:

Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz w/Tuniq 120
abit IP35-E mobo
8800GT 512 @700
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Modded Antec 900 case
Corsair 620HX

I can't imagine using a 4850 for 1680x1050. With all eye candy on, my 4870 is just adequate (~50-60fps) for certain games. I guess it depends on whether you feel compelled to always run with maxed out settings or not.

9800GT/GTX would be fine at that resolution with high settings. It's exactly what I have on my 22" LCD at 1680x1050 with a 9800GTX+.
Except of course, Crysis/Warhead.

For those of you saying a 9800GT/GTX would be fine... im going to have to say hell no. I currently have an overclocked 8800GT 512mb and it is not nearly enough. I want to play ALL games at the highest settings without having to worry. Im wondering which card would be able to do this for me for the cheapest price.

Which one you find cheaper between these two: 4870 1 GB/ GTX 260 core 216. In my opinion the X2 is overkill for this resolution, except maybe Crysis.

Thanks for all the responses so far =) I was wondering if anyone knows of a review of the GTX 206 overclocked to around 700mhz. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

semlethe3rd I fixed the link, you have a BFG GTX 260 with 216 cores at 655 mhz for $289 after AR! That's not bad. The 4870 1GB is not bad either, $269 AR.

So you ask for opinions and when you get them, you say hell no ?

Another vote for the 4870. I run all of my games at 1680x1050 maxed out and couldn't be happier with the performance.

No offense JPB but the 9800GT/GTX isn't much of an upgrade from a highly overclocked 8800GT, and I dont see it playing the games I want too maxed out.

Does anyone know how an overclocked 4870 1gb would do against an overclocked 260 216? :)

I'm thinking of the same upgrade. I game at the same res. Would a 4870 1GB be overkill vs. the 512MB or is it a wash considering the performance vs. price difference?

I think a 4850 for 130ish is easily the better deal over a 4870 for 200ish at 1680.

I mean.. unless you have to have Ultra/Max detail 8x/16x then there is no question. The 4870 512 doesn't benchmark that much better even at 19x12.

besides Crysis my 4850 runs everything maxed at 1680. i know a 4870 won't max Crysis at 1680 but it will do better for sure, and i think it would be worth it if you have the funds

Well honestly i think my 8800GT overclocked to where it is, is comparable already to the 4850. I can already play most games at medium .. if not high settings, its just not as smooth as I wish it was. If im going to upgrade I want to make sure i can max everything out without a question, except for crysis of course.

You've waited this long, may as well wait for another refresh. The 260/280 and 4850/4870 are getting long in the tooth.

Yep... I kept waiting and waiting so I decided to go with an evga gtx 260 w/90 step up.
