Bus pass

If you live in a state where you have to buy insurance (liability), you could easily pay $1k or more a year in coverage.

If you can only afford $1500-2000 . . . can you really afford to OWN a car?

SF vehicle auction
A lot of cheap deals here.

another question... how much (average) would it cost to replace a head gasket?

$20-40 if you do it yourself or $300++++++ if you have somebody else do it. Plus there is always the chance the bearings in the engine are trashed if they have been driving around with the headgasket blown. The head could alway end up needing replaced. Don't get a $2k project car for a daily driver unless you can work on it yourself and have backup.

thanks for the info. I have a friend who could replace it for me if i get the part... would he be able to tell if it is more than just the head gasket if we went to check out the car? (i dunno if you can answet that, but it's late so i can't call him now

Sometimes it can be hard to tell, without inspecting the bottom end of the motor / oil pan. As has been said, if the car was being driven around with a bad head gasket, and enough coolant got into the oil, the bearings will be trashed - or at least, prematurely worn. Coolant in the oil can destroy a motor very quickly. 🙁 It would suck terribly to do the head gasket, and find out that the motor is done anyways.

Depending on the car...some HGs are easier to replace than others. If it's an I4, it's easier to do the gasket than if it's a V-configuration motor. (v-motors have two head gaskets). You could get away with replacing only the bad one on a V motor, but if one's already gone out, the other probably isn't too far behind it.

EDIT: I found a Nissan 200sx for 700... it's 1985, and has 120,000 miles on it, but they say it runs well (selling because they are moving). Whaddya think?

Thanks, but I don't buy Fords (you'll find most Jews don't)

Why not? Is there something about Ford that Jews hate?

Sure, I could see you guys not liking Volkswagon, but Ford?!?

One often hates a traitor even more than his enemy. Henry Ford was a raving anti-semite. He was even given an award by Hitler.

I recommend a Chevrolet Beretta. The 90-93's came with a 3.1 liter V6. I had a 92 with the 3.1, and it lasted 180k with absolutely no problems until it was totalled. That engine is damn near bulletproof, and you can find A LOT of spare parts in the junk yards. There are people that drive them passed 300k with no problems on the forums I used to frequent.

(The 2.2 isn't half bad either.)
