Best camping spot in Arizona?

Does any of AZ ATOT know of a nice camping spot near Flagstaff, AZ? I get to take a long weekend for my birthday 🙂 and my husband suggested we go camping, and then stay the night at Little America (my favorite hotel).

There are plenty of nice spots up there, none of which have I ever been to.

Flagstaff was just too close to the city for me. I'd skip the Little America and just head up the beeline to exit 616 near Long Valley or take the Knoll lake road if you want to be near water.

Or you could be a sissy and sleep in a hotel . . .

I just want to spend one night at Little America. That is not sissy!

Yes, he has birthday's too. He has no desire to stay at Little America, though.

I'd camp in Oak Creek Cyn.

Actually, this is a

What about Woods Canyon Lake? Anyone ever been there?

Yep. It's great. But not by Flagstaff. It's way east from there.

How long is the drive do you think?

It's over an hour from Winslow, I don't know what cutover roads you could take, but i'd guess 1.5-2 hours minimum.

EDIT: Google maps says 162 mi ? about 2 hours 51 mins

How about Knoll Lake as Jak replied before. It is awesome scenery off the rim. The only problem I saw was that the campground is not next/on the lake. You actually have to drive or walk a mile or two to get there. Camping on the water is prohibited! shitty!

Where is a good (rural) spot up North to go camping and fishing. I really want to be on a lake that is moderate to excellent fishing! Also, preferably not a lake that has a mercury warning like a lot of the lakes in Arizona.

I have nothing useful to add but on Sunday I am taking a daytrip to Tonto Park. So yay for getting out of the heat 😛

How much roughing it do you want to do? When it's cooler you can do Verde hot springs (as long as you can stand the occasional naked hippy). If you want to endure a long hike for a beautiful place you need to go to Fossil Springs. If you're going to sleep there you need to backpack. My wife and I can do the hike in about 2 hours if we push it.
