Be sure to quote eachother each time. Since you two are the only ones posting, following this conversation is very hard.

What's your price range? Do you want a hard drive based, minidvd, dvd, hi-def?

$400 to $600

hi-def

Ain't gonna happen.

That's the cheapest HD camcorder at the moment.

I will go the dvd route then. Should still look really good.

When are you getting it?

dvd won't look any better than any digital video tape.... if you cant afford HD, at least go with a 3-CCD model... You will get better color seperation and definition.

I've always been a fan of the Panny 3-ccd models...

Yes

Nope, the camera still will still only be able to record 2 channel audio in digital format, which both DVD and MiniDV record in (there won't be a difference) The only difference between one that records in DVD and MiniDV is that DVD's can be finalized right in the camera and plopped right into a DVD Player. However, keep in mind, like computer dvd's, they make write once and rewritable ones. The write once are cheap, but, they can only be used once. The rewritables are nice, albiet at a higher cost.

I prefer miniDV still. More than likely you will end up dumping the videos to a computer that has a DVD-RW drive anyway so you can do some simple editing, then output right to a DVD.

EDIT: Actually, looks like MiniDVD-R and MiniDVDRW disks have dropped in price making them almost even in price; however, i still like the MiniDV format and the GS300 specifically.

Video in a dvd camera is already compressed, so the quality will be even worse when you edit it and do something, mini DV on the other hand is uncompressed format and you can do whatever you want without significant quality loss during the edit.
