Don't get me wrong, I love this laptop!
at $499, 1/2 of Compaq 2201, I will overlook almost any flaw.
It is however, disappointing. I doesn't cost manufacture extra 0.02cents to add an IR,
in fact most motherboad (notebook or desktop) comes with IR circuitry build into the chipset it self.
Toshiba probably spend $0.05 cents removing it....Why?
No Buildin Wifi can be excuse to some extend, but why removed the MINI-PCI connector all together?
Why not leave it in there, and those of us who want pay an EXTRA $30 buying a MINI-PCI can do so.
Still, its the best laptop deal of 2004. Did anyone buy the CircuitCity or OfficeDepot deal?

This Toshiba does not come with wifi, which is when a laptop has the internet, right?

this toshiba laptop does not come with built in wifi... meaning it does not have a built in wireless network card.
you don't need to purchase any additional hardware to get this laptop online. this laptop has both a 56k modem and 10/100 network card, so you can get on the internet via dialup or with the wired network card (cable modem or dsl). you would only need to purchase additional hardware if you want to have wireless access with this laptop.
no chris you only need a modem or NIC for internet connection depending on how you set up to your ISP... The WiFi they are talkin about is Wireless connection to the internet.. That is all... Allmost all computers now come with at lease a NIC and a modem...

Just look for an 802.11g card that can go in the PCMIA slot. There are alot of these on sale all over as parts of kits with a router, or solo. Off hand I can't point you to any deals, but I know that one of the office chains has one for $10 after rebate. 802.11g is your best choice because it is backwards compatible with the 802.11b standard, but provides a much better throughput rate if you happen upon a "g" network. There are also USB adapters available at a much higher price (look like thumb drives) but I wouldn't recomend them as they are easy to misplace and I imagine more prone to being bumped as they stick out more from your computer.

Last year the laptop had a 14" screen, which I thought was not very good. There were about $400 in rebates. I sold mine to a friend and have used a Toshiba 700 till I setup this years laptop. Oh, last year it only had a DVD...
So this is the first year without Mail-IN-REBATE:

you would not want to buy that card becuz it's an internal mini-pci card. i hve read two ppl's account (including one from this forum) that after opening up the laptop, they have verified that there is no min-pci slot. as someone has already mentioned, just get a pcmcia wireless g card. if you are lazy to go rebates (like me), just head over to the FS/FT forums and u should be able to find a 802.11g pcmcia card for around $20.
Am I doing something wrong or does the touchpad on the s109 not support scrolling? I've used several other touchpads that allow you to use the right portion of the touchpad to scroll up and down.

edit - for me... the right edge of the touchpad is for scrolling up and down. the bottom edge is for scrolling left and right. the top of the touchpad lets me move forwards or backwards a page. i don't think the left edge does anything tho.
Don't know what the app is that's supposed to be running. I have "Toshiba touch and launch" and "Touchpad On/Off utility" both running, still no ability to scroll. Also searched Toshiba's site for other utils, but no luck. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help. I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall the alps drivers. Probably caused by something that best buy did to optimize my system. Works like a charm now.
That's partially correct. The Satellite A15-S1292 from last year did have a 14.1" screen and $400 in MIRs. But it did have a DVD/CD-RW combo drive. I know because I got in on it last year and the one for this year as well.

AGREE, one of the WORST PLACE for SPEAKERS
Overall great Laptop for $499;
Lousy Laptop if you paid $1000 for it. There is a reason BB select this laptop for clearance,
but it is a better bargain than those HP ZE or /Compaq 2201 @ OfficeMax.
I'm looking forward to BlackFriday2005:
Maybe we'll see the HP ZV1000 with 14.1 WideScreen on sale next year.
