Best Buy Rant

I just came from Best Buy (looking to see if they had any of the $49 routers "magically" appear back on the shelves. To their credit, they didn't.)

I noticed a clearance on "Spectra III" processors. It was $79.50, so I thought I'd look into it. The only information on the box was that it fit a socket and was 600 mhz. Here's the converstion (me in bold, Best Buy Computer Genius in italics):

What kind of processor is that Spectra III?
It's a Pentium III 600.
Are you sure, or are you assuming that because it says "600" on the box? It makes a big difference if that's a Celeron or a Pentium III.
It's a Pentium III.
Okay. So you've sold these before, or you're assuming that from the box? I just want to be careful before I buy it.
It's a Pentium III 600mhz! It says it right there on the box!
Actually, it only says 600mhz. It doesn't say what type of processor it is. It has the Roman numeral III on the box, but it isn't completely clear.
Look, we have one open right here. It's a Pentium II 600...*gets open box* Here it is. It has a heatsink and fan, and you can see it's a Pentium III.

I look at the chip. It's a Cyrix/Via 600mhz processor.

Sorry, but that's not a Pentium III. It's a Cyrix processor. There's a big difference.
No, it's a Pentium III. It doesn't say "Intel", but that doesn't matter. This is the same thing.
Well, it's a very different processor. Only Intel makes a Pentium III. This chip has a totally different architecture. It's 600mhz, but that doesn't make it the same thing.
Look, I'm not on commission. I'm not trying to sell you something just to get your money. I'm telling you it's a Pentium III.
I know you don't work on commission, and I know you aren't intentionally trying to rip me off. But it's not the same chip.
Sir, I told you what it is. If you don't want it, I'll just put it back.
I don't want it, because it's not what you said it was. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just letting you know so you don't accidentally rip someone off by selling them a chip that's worth half of what they THINK they're buying.
Okay, whatever.
Yeah, right, WHATEVER. Just stick it back up there and rip the next guy off who doesn't know any better. Jesus, you're an idiot.

I shudder to think what this guy was telling people back when Cyrix had their "PR" ratings.

It's a Pentium III Rio. Come on dude. You know they're all the same. Deal with it. 😉

Ripped Off (Loleatte Holloway)

I thought I lucked out getting the last $49 router at my Best Buy but it was too good to be true, the darn thing didn't work. At least they let me exchange it for a different model though since they didn't have any of the netgear ones left.

LOL, and he tried to pull the old "I'm not on commission, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express" crap on you!

Ok, how about the ignorant salesperson who says a radeon VE is twice as fast as a Radeon because it has to support two monitors, so they put two chips on. True story, I tried to talk someone out of buying it, but the best buy sales idiot brainwashed him with stupidity.

I've was told at BB that if I didn't get a DVD drive when I bought my computer, I wouldn't be able to burn DVDs in my CD-Rw. I told the guy he was a moron, and asked for some one else to help me.

<< typical Best Buy/Circuit City employee----99.9% wouldn't know their asses from a hole in the ground >>

Sweet! I'm special! in only .1% of a group!!!!!

Now c'mon Rio Rebel, you actually thought it was an Intel PIII in an Evergreen box?

Haha.. just gotta learn to never, ever ever trust an employee at one of these retail outlets. I work at CC.. and can help out 99.99% of people with their computer questions, but may god help them if they try to talk to one of my co-workers.. haha.

I like Best Buys, CompUSA, and Circuit City because they have some nice looking girls working there.

But I would never ask any questions because most of the time, I know more than their salespeople.

<< Now c'mon Rio Rebel, you actually thought it was an Intel PIII in an Evergreen box? >>

Ace, I honestly didn't know what kind of chip it was. That's why I asked.

Don't get defensive, Buddy. I know there are some rare (VERY RARE) people who work there and could still distinguish their ass from a hole in the ground. 😉

I had to look at that box carefully when I first saw it in the showcase. Looked like a Celeron to me. I knew Best Buy would ever have the common decency to sell something worth a damn!

Rio Rebel--you showed great constraint. I don't know if I could've. But, I have to admit, it's not really fair or gratifying playing with them anymore.

I just go in and open boxes. If they have to get it out from behind the case or under the glass counter, I stand there and hold it and look at the box until another customer comes up and starts talking to them. Then I open the box. By the time they say, "You can't open that", I either want to buy it or don't.....so, I buy it or say, "OK", and hand it back to them.
