Best Buy makes money hand over fist

Layoffs ahead

This sure would motivate me to work hard.

I used to work for Best Buy years ago...crappy wages, crappy benefits, and crappy treatment...and those were "the good days"

I walked into a best buy store the other day. It was a rather manic/noisy nightmare of an affair. I hate that store. However, there were always 3-5 employees visible at any given time -- doing nothing but standing and chatting, waiting to swoop down on you to give you a sales pitch...A bit excessive don't you think? It was like walking into a giant flock of lazy vultures...where everywhere you turn, theres another few waiting to peck at you.

Brad Anderson has a juggling act ahead of him.

Emboldened by a string of successful quarters, the top executive at Best Buy Co. Inc. said Thursday that he plans to ramp up the company's growth by adding another 90 stores and 1,000 home-theater installers by next March.

At the same time, Anderson has begun a sweeping cost-cutting initiative that will lead to layoffs as early as next month.

The goal, Anderson said, is to get the expense-cutting done quickly so the company can focus on growth.

"We will try to do it as rapidly as we possibly can, so people ... know what's coming and can make appropriate decisions for their lives"

But Best Buy's strong performance could make it difficult for Anderson to persuade employees that across-the-board cuts are necessary, analysts said.

"We are accustomed to seeing troubled companies pruning their staff and letting people go, but Best Buy is really hitting on all cylinders," said Alan Rifkin, a retail analyst at Lehman Brothers.

I hate BB with a passion but they have been implementing these store theme ideas that have lead to large costs and explosive growth in hiring. I believe the last article I read about this had them hiring 11,000 employees for geek squad.

In the end with expanding stores I expect their total amount of employee's to grow.

Do you have any comprehension ability whatsoever or are you truly Geppetto's puppet come to life?

Oh? Maybe you need to reread this piece again.

Ill highlight them for the slow on this msgboard.

In fact, Best Buy may end the year with more employees in the stores than it has now, Anderson said.

I have stated my dislike for the company but I think this piece is overlooking the massive hirings they have done in the past 6-8 months and the hirings they will doing due to adding another 90 stores.

The one thing thats really bad about Best Buy and gets worse is the way store managers are treated. They come in gung ho after their BBBW (Best Buy BrainWashing) and think its all about the company and push the employees to SELL SELL SELL or threaten to fire them or give them no hours, then if you come in the bottom half of the company for sales, you get fired or demoted.

When I do go into a Best Buy, I'm amazed at how many new employees and managers there are.

When I was growing up, the store seemed to keep the same people forever.

And the problem with this perfectly reasonable business decision is...?

I don?t like best buy at all. They make there stupid floor employees sell those unneeded overpriced warrantees. I remember buying a 50 pack of DVDRs and the salesman said would like to buy a warranty! Now there new gimmick is too sell you overpriced magazine subscriptions at the checkout/--watch out for that one!

Stores like Best Buy hire cheap labor like high school kids who lack product knowledge and or customer service skills.

Good site to check out what former/current employees and customers have to say about Best Buy: http://www.bestbuysux.org/index1.html

The math is quite simple...cut the fat of excess employees in some stores, to reduce costs and support initiatives to pursue a strategy of growth.

Expansion = more stores = more jobs = good thing

Slash jobs that are not value added to create new jobs and increase revenues...a fairly solid strategic approach.

Actually they did that years ago. They introduced something called Customer Based Scheduling. In it you may have to work Monday Night, Tuesday Morning, Wednesday During the day, and Sunday Open to Close...this is fine if you are single. But if you have a family and need to work M-F 9 to 5 and it was agreed upon for years to work that then all of a sudden many people were told they had to switch or get fired or quit. Most were fired or quit

So - they scheduled their staff around the times that they would be busy? That's crazy talk, man!

No...they just called it that. They still had 8-5, 9-6 shifts during the week, except now instead of having a steady schedule they made you work different hours every week.

Its fine you don't like bestbuy, but there really is no reason to insult their employees that are often times highschool or college students. The average customer at a store like that has very little knowledge about what they are buying. The job of the sales person is to show them the basics of the products and explain the differences. If you want highly technical support on a certain item do the research yourself or contact the manufacturer. Those stores carry thousands of items, you cannot expect ANYONE to know the most technical things about EVERY item, regardless of whether or not they are in higschool, or a 45 year old lifetime salesman.

Best buy does have some good selection in a wide range of products. If you are an idiot consumer maybe you deserve an idiot employee. They could fire half their people and you would not miss them. They will probably fire the smart people.

You can count on that 😛

This is one of the things I don't like about Best Buy. I would never trust a salesperson to provide objective, honest knowledge about products. Rather, I'd much prefer to do my own research. In fact, I'd love to see a store that offered Internet terminals to its customers for research purposes.

I'd much prefer a "leave me alone" store with less employees and, most importantly, lower prices.

I overheard a guy telling customers a couple of years ago that "HP doesn't use DPI [on their printers] anymore - they use a newer technology." Huh? That guy still works there.

I always stop at Best Buy when I'm in a town that has one. It's the only chance I get to actually get to see some on the new products. I don't buy too much there though. 😀
