That's right! Best Buy will be making its way to Canada very soon to give Future Shop some competition. 63 stores are planned by 2003.

Finally, we might actually see some lower prices and lots of price matching out here.

I read that Future Shop is also building 30+ new stores...

But it's definitely good news, Future Shop sux0rs for prices. Now all we need is decent shipping prices from online retailers..:)

All your best buy are belong to Canada!

:)

Good news! Future slop has ok prices sometimes...but they have terrible customer service, and usually a pretty weak selection.

Good for DVD buying, bad for computer part buying.

I saw a big thing between the two companies on Pricewatch I beleive a few months ago.

Basically best buy is butting a store whever there is a futureshop, or at least in a their proximity.

From what I hear.. BestBuy is the US version of Crappy Future Shop, Same crap, same bad service, same unedumakated clerks, same high prices. So they compete for the same market, neither will win people like AnandTech members over.

I won't buy at Future Shop, and BestBuy won't get my money either :)

Man Best Buy sucks, sorry to burst your bubble but their prices are not exactly what you call cheap, what you should be looking out for is comp usa, they have the cheapest prices of them all, i just got a copy of serious sam for 6.99$. and Black&White for 18.00$.

Hmmm. The Future Shop couldn't compete in the US so they pulled back to Canada and retrenched..Now if the competitors from the US start building stores in Canada, where will the Future Shop pull back to?? Best Buy ain't great, but they do offer "occasional" good deals with no shipping charges, waiting for delivery, etc. Also has a decent return policy without having to ship something back to the manufacturer.

Well...in Canada there is no alternative to FutureShop so any competition has to be somewhat better than what it is right now. THe US is obviously cheaper in electronics and they have more choices like Circuit City, Comp USA, Best Buy, and some others. We only have futureshop who's prices and service stinks!

Best Buy blows major goats. Even more than the original goatblower: the Viper 2

Agreed... BestBuy blows! Customer service sucks. The people who work in the Computer department are dicks and they ignore you when you are waiting to get something from the lockup bin.... I had to wait like 20min. once to get a freakin stick of memory because they couldn't find the person with the keys. Then I had to wait another 20 in a long ass checkout line which is being held up by a customer getting a new puter and the MSN rebate. BTW, why the hell would anyone get that damn $400 MSN deal!! It's a ripoff! Gah, BB sucks! Now, if I need something locally I goto CompUSA. Enjoy BB in Canada ;)

Sweeeet. :) It'll be nice for Future Shop to have some competition, especially in Victoria where I live. Computer prices are way too high here.

EDIT: That is if they open a store in Victoria of course.

A good friend of mine works in loss prevention for best buy. One of the idiots at the customer service desk took back a car stereo that a gentleman had just bought that day. She returned his check to him, as it was still in her drawer. Too bad she didnt realize a brick wrapped in a towel was what was in the box. I go to Best Buy only to see what is widely available, and to know how much is too much to pay for things.

No kidding I have ended up ordering most of my parts from stores in Ontario. You dont have to pay PST if you order from out of province which is another bonus. I only moved to Victoria 7 months ago and I still cannot get over the prices.

I remember a long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was a Pricewatch Canadian version and we could actually get deals on hardware, but alas we've come to the modern world and no such luck anymore :(

(there actually used to be)

Yikes... I worked for Best Buy from 1994 through the end of 1997, and I can say that in those 3 years, I was one of two people in the computer department that knew how to get into a BIOS, open a case, or even what the difference between ISA and PCI was...

I'll wander through Best Buy when I wanna grab a cheap DVD or scout out a no-brainer item (scored my Netgear RT314 for $99, even got a $30 rebate beyond that), but overall Best Buy is teh suck. I mean, it probably beats a snapkick to the groin, but... what doesn't?

What is this crap? I hope there isn't going to be a Best Buy in Canada before there is one here in Connecticut. That would really tick me off!!

Great! Along with Future Shop that's another big chain I will avoid for computer stuff. The stuff costs more, and the people there know zilch.

For all of the americans complaining about Best Buy's customer service, well whenever i visit the US the customer service pretty much sucks everywhere (especially Indiana). Maybe it's because the smart people get jobs elsewhere leaving the uneducated (drop outs) to fill the retail jobs.

In Canada the customer service is generally better everywhere compared to the US. We don't have huge line-ups at customer service desks and since jobs are hard to get (unless you're in TOronto) we have educated people with common sense working in the retail industry. Just an observation.

SO, if Best Buy does come up here, we won't get as crappy service as you Americans do. Just an observation.

Oh I'm sure we will. Maybe there will be shorter line ups (but probably not, at least not in Toronto), but when we do actually talk to someone they'll still be the same sales drone types you find at Future Shop. In the times I've been to Future Shop looking at computer or electronics equipment, I've only ever found one guy that knew what he was talking about and who wasn't pimping with the crap low-qual high-markup stuff. My guess though was this guy was a student with a summer job only, not a career sales drone.
