Protip: never buy a laptop retail. Get business class laptops. They're a similar price ($700-$1200 is the sweet spot for good laptop), have much better construction, have a 3 year warranty, have easy access panels, and typically overnight replacement parts.
Yep. I don't think I'd ever buy a retail grade laptop for my own use; they're built like junk. And business-class laptops are not that much. The T420i I bought back in Summer 2011 saw me through my PhD and a 1.5 yr stint as a postdoc (though, in the latter gig, I left it at the lab all the time and had to keep it plugged in). $750 for ~6 years of service. To boot, I think I only had the base 1 year warranty too [doubled to 2 years because of my CC]. I wouldn't even worry about extending the warranty if you can use a CC to double it: I bet most things would die, if they were to die, within a year. The rare time something doesn't last, you'll be self-insured for the loss.
