Went into Best Buy today to get my laptop sent off for service again. Second time in 5 weeks. Well while I had to wait for 1.5 hours for them to run some tests I heard the techs tell every single customer that they had to pay a $25 fee if they wanted their computer to be able to get on the internet. It was quite fun listening to these so called techs explain how only winXP is affected (RPC) and how important this $25 fee was. Nothing like business ethics.

Next time buy from Dell.
Get lost troll.

Troll? I'd say the same thing... Dell rocks.
What does dell have to do with Best Buy telling people they must pay to patch their computers?

CompUSA sucks.. they will stick you for every penny you got for the crap you don't need. Dell doesn't do it, but they do their support over the phone. That is what he was pointing out.

Nothing, but when does an "Off Topic" Topic ever stay On Topic?

Where does CompUSA play into my initial post?

Right here:

See, right there! :) OK.... I mistyped, I meant Best Buy. Still, you've edited your original post to include the RPC statement. At first you just said "to get online." which to me doesn't mean RPC, sounds more like they are saying you need to pay $25 to configure their PC for a net connection.

EDIT: Actually after thinking about it, why shouldn't they charge a $25 fee to install the patch? DO you expect them to do it for free? Yes, the patch is free to download yourself, if you know how. If you don't, you pay someone to do it. Same goes for work on your vehicle... Did I need to spend $430 on a tuneup last week? No, I could have done it myself, if I knew how and had the time. Unfortunately, I don't know how to gap my plugs properly, replace em along with new plug wires, replace my distro cap, and whatever else they did. Hell, the bill was half labor... most of it was probably really easy to do, IF you know how to do it. Same goes for the RPC patch. It's simple if you know how to do it. IF you don't, you pay someone who does. That is how it works.

They gave them no choice. They basically said either you pay the $25 fee or you will never be able to get online.

Ahhh, ok. Thanks for clarifying. Par for the course I suppose... all of the national computer chains are out to make a buck.

How is it Best Buy's job to get you up and running online?

When they sell you a Phone, are they supposed to come to your house and hook it up for you? Do they call your local telephone company?

When they sell you a DTV unit, are they supposed to set it up for you?

They provide a list of services and charge per service. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's wrong. It's not their job to get you up and running with a laptop you purchase from them. You are just purchasing the product, not tech services also.

It's nice they do provide the service for people who CAN'T get a laptop online. Regardless of what they charge.

The $25 charge does not get the purchasers online in anyway. It is to install the RPC patch. Telling a customer that the only way a computer will work on the internet is to pay $25 to have this patch installed is bullshit.

Do you expect the BB techs to fix people's computers for free?

If they don't know how, then they're SOL unless someone does it for them. $25 would sound like a pretty good price to me if I didn't know what I was doing.

EDIT: should have read whole thread. I get it now.

yes, technically its fraud and the victim should sue and complain to the FTC
