Best Buy 14" EMachines Celeron Laptop $199 - HOT: processor replaceable!

Can't get anything but netbooks at that price, so this is reasonably nice for someone who doesn't want a single core Atom with 10" screen.

The Celeron it has is Core 2 class (Penryn).

I just picked it up - it's surprisingly well built for this price! Solid construction, carbon fiber- like top, front mounted mic/headphone, SD card slot, and comes with Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium, not a ton of crapware. Screen is nice and bright, sound isn't bad. DVD burner + HDMI is a plus!

The only downside is the 4 cell battery, so plan on 2-3 hours of life.

I wonder if the cpu is soldered on the socket? If not, you may be able to get a cheap Core2 in the forum for only $20 or so and put in it.

Crap, pickup only and all the stores in my area already sold out. I should have placed the order at work when they had stock...

Went and took a look and Fritzo is right, the build quality is amazing for what you pay. The CPU is extremely lack-luster however, it was having to work hard to play 480p Youtube videos. If I knew that the CPU was replaceable I would have picked one up.

NEWS FLASH: The processor is not soldiered in - I just removed it.

Just bought an Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile 2.1GHz off Ebay for $20 shipped. 😀

Definitely a great bang for the money then. That Core2 will make it like a $450 lappy.

Edit: Not in stock @ columbia, sc anyways... 🙁

$25-30 T4500s are pretty commonplace on fleabay, now, and upgrading the memory should be relatively cheap. You'd end up with something far faster than a netbook for about the same price.

Nice find, OP.

Pfftt....I got a T6570 from there for $20 shipped. Laptop processors are super cheap. (Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile 2.1GHz 800MHz 2MB)

The T4500 runs @2.3GHz, so it's mostly an L2 vs. clockspeed thing. If you got a T6570 for $20, you got a good deal.
