I have never created my own web page before but I do consider myself a above average computer user. What programs would you suggest for me to use to create a decent webpage. Im going to be incorporating java chat room, a forum and of course pictures, graphics and maybe sounds. Thanks in advance

i might be living in the stone age but when i made webpages, i used microsoft frontpage. I loved how you could use a normal 'office' type work environment or an html based one, depending on what you were doing. they have added a lot of cool features too. there are probably better options though.

The newest version Frontpage is actually not bad at all. Granted, it's been the laughing stock of design programs for a long time, but word that I'm hearing is the new one is much, much better.

I have used both dreamweaver and frontpage for some rather large websites. I know for years dreamweaver has been the hands down winner, but if you are strictly comparing the latest versions of both products I actually prefer frontpage, espically if you are a beginner. Dreamweaver requires a little more knowledge to use properly.

@ all the people saying that the new Frontpage is better: how is the html/css/javascript that it produces? Is it decently portable and standards compliant?

HTML-Kit if you know HTML like the back of your hand, Nvu if you don't. Quit funding macromedia and microsoft's crappy coding apps.
