My parents are looking into buying a new computer. They'll only use it for word processing, internet, and some image/video editing. Will probably get it throught Dell.

Dell offers these cards on the system in question:
ATI Rage Ultra 32mb
Nvidia Geforce 4mx 64mb
Nvidia Geforce Ti4200
Nvidia Geforce Ti4600

My question? Would it be worth getting a Ti4200 over the ATI or GF 4mx if they'll not be using 3D programs at all? Any input is appreciated.

ps Any thoughts on the reliability of current Compaq computers?

The reliability of Compaq computers are good. Mine have been working (almost) non-stop since Dec 1999. But get a Dell.
Of course it's woth it to get a Ti4200. You can game on it.

The 2d image quality of the ti 4200 may be higher then the mx (probably even the ati which looks really old, though a newer ati will beat them all in 2d). What is the price difference between the 4200 and the mx?

It all depends on how they are going to edit video.
If they are using a video camera w/ a firewire conection, then video card does not matter.
If they are going to use the video in on the video card to capture, then ATi Radeon card would be a beter choice.

Geforc 4 mx or 4200 is for gaming and larger monitors.

If they are not going to do any gaming and not have a monitor larger than 17 in, save your money ang get the cheaper card.

Use the money you save for a larger hard drive or a cd burner.
I hope that helps.

as for The reliability of current Compaq computers

They still make computers?
