I'm looking for a flatscreen 19" for under $300. It must be able to do 85 Hz or better at 1280x1024. I was looking at an AOC 9klr, but it has mixed reviews. It also didn't say anything about shadow mask or aperture grill either. How much better is an aperture grill or shadow mask than a regular monitor?

Suggestions?

Someone in that thread reported using a 100 Hz refresh rate at 1280x1024. Anyone second that?

That's what I thought. Thanks.

Is my sig hyper linked? I don't see it. If it's not, how do you do that?

to make links in ur sig... u have to use vb code. u have to type the context like the following, but replace the parethesis' with brackets:

(L=my rig)http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.html?id=18690(/L)

I've heard decent things about Cornerstone.... (they use Mitsubishi CRTs and their own electronics). They have two models in that range... the p2450 (which does 1280x1024 at 85Hz for $199) and the p2460 (which will do 1600x1200 at 85 Hz for $289). Check out MonitorsDirect.com

I personally bought a Sony G420S here recently, and I'm VERY happy with it, but I paid $390 (incl. shipping).

Good luck!!!

I have a Cornerstone p1460 which my father brought home last week. I think it's two years old. It has wavy magnetic-field lines all through it. I have to adjust the Horizontal moire to about 14 to make them the least noticable. Also, it's ghosting and streaking. You know, the glowing effect. Stuff streaks as I move through games also. And it's making an annoying high pitch noise from time to time as well.

I've been leaning toward a shadow mask monitor because I think the horizontal wires would really bug me. To whoever said you had a Son G420S: It's aperture grill, right? How do you like the wires?

You can get a NEC FE950+ for $285 at newegg.com. It has a Diamondtron NF tube, which is the same as a Samsung 900NF. I saw its little brother (700+) in the store and the screen was absolutely beautiful! I'd been looking at it for about 5 minutes before I noticed the wires.

LET ME SECOND THAT!
This monitor is AWESOME.
Super high resolution at faster refresh rates - I'm running 1600X1200 @ 85 hz.
I would go even higher, but everything would be too small.
And the damper wires are barely visible.

And best of all, I got it for $170 shipped from CDW after AMEX BVG PM.

An aperture grille is better than a shadow mask, but be prepared for the 2 damper wires going across the screen, but like I said, they are barely visible on the P910

Oh, If you're thinking about the Samsung 955DF, I would spend a little more and get a true "trinitron" tube.
The samsung has horribly low refresh rates, and max res. is only 1600 X 1200 at a dismal 65 hz.

I love my Sony G400 19" monitor I bought from Sams for $300 about a month ago. I run it at 85hz. It does have the stablizing wires which look odd at first but then are barely noticable most of the time. It is VERY large and heavy but great crisp picture and really flat. May be a little more then you want to spend but I know you would be happy with this killer monitor. I know I am :). Good luck.

Yes, the G420S is aperature grill... as far as the lines, I only really notice when I have the background WHITE (and I mean white-white). Most of the time, its very difficult to see them. I love the monitor itself--nice crisp text and good colors/graphics. I'd highly recommend it, although its a bit pricey.

As far as the Cornerstone goes, its hard to judge a product on a two-year old sample--especially one that you don't know where its been. I've heard nothing but good reviews about them.... although, for my money (its only $40 more), I'd go with the sony every time.
