Best brand for hard drives?

I want to buy a 20 GB 7200 rpm hard drive. But I'm caught between which brand. I've narrowed it down to IBM, Maxtor, and Quantum. Which brand to you think is the best? Or should I just get which ever one I can find at the best price? Thanks guys. 🙂

I'd get IBM 🙂 I'm always biased, but they have rumour for being stable, and of good quality. The 75GXP series is a very good one.

The WD205BA Western Digital 20.5 7200 rpm is a damn fine HDD. I have (2) of them in my box. They are fast and very quiet.

Sorry for not saying which drives, here are the ones I'm considering:

Quantum Fireball LM 20.0 GB 7200 rpm ATA66
IBM 20.0 GB 7200 rpm 75GXP ATA66/100
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 20.0 GB 7200 rpm ATA66/100

If I get an ATA100 motherboard then I'll definitely go with either the IBM or Maxtor ones. Does Quantum make an ATA100 compatible version of the drive above? Thanks. 🙂

Go with IBM 75 GXP.

I have a couple of the Quantum LM Plus and a couple of the IBM 75 GXP.

I prefer the 75 GXP. It's higher quality, less noise, and higher STR.

Definitely either Quantum, IBM or Maxtor.

If your computer will support ATA100, buy the one that supports ATA100 - I would choose IBM, but Maxtor would probably be quite a bit cheaper without much (or any) performance decrease.

If you are not going to be using ATA100, give Quantum a try.

I feel it's important to note that the IBM Deskstar 75GXP series and the WD "Expert" lines are damn near identical

Agreed. Your begging for an argument. See what you can find under the search window.

Maxtor Diamondmax Plus. Got the 40GB and 20GB varities, both quick, silent and reliable. Plus they have one advantage over the IBM .. they're cheap! (And now support UDMA-100)

i've had ibm, maxtor, seagate, and wd ide drives. i think the wd is my favorite. the seagates crapped out a few times and are noisier than the others. i currently have the wd and the maxtor 7200 rpm versions in my computer now, and the wd is quieter.

I've used a 3.8gig Maxtor 5400 for 3 years and it woked perfect. Just got a 30gig Maxtor 7200 and it's fast and easy to setup.

Maxtors are quiet, but a couple of chips on them get very hot during reads - 60-65 Celcius, and this was with the drive outside of the case and a room temp of 23C. Maxtor said that those temps were perfectly acceptable.

It sounds like the Maxtor and IBM drives are slightly better. I'll probably go with which ever I can get at the lowest price. Although if my motherboard wont support ATA100 then I'll consider Quantum as well. Thanks you guys. Any more info will be appreciated. 🙂

Edit: Yeah I guess this topic has been beat to death several times! 😉

If not for the shortage of Quantum drives that has forced them into a hideous RMA policy, I would recommend the Quantum drive. IBM would be a close second, with Maxtor a distant third. The Quantum does make a bit more noise, but if you're after performance, noise and heat should be secondary concerns. Ignore ATA100, it's useless for today's drives, and won't be useful anytime soon.

WD dropped the Expert line, it doesn't exist anymore.
