hmm I didn't think about that, good call.

I had a 4850 that always froze when I had my side panel on. I have extremely good airflow, with a 120mm 105CFM fan blowing directly on the mobo where the card was, and I had hard modded the card to run at 100% fan speed. Returned that one and got a dual-slot 4870, haven't had a single heat problem after adjusting the fan speed via CCC text file.

I have a 9800gtx now, and you have to set the fan speed to 100% manually... auto is 4 to 39% and it gets o 90+ degrees in a matter of seconds. And for a while, when the card hit 60 degrees it reverted the fan speed back to manual. Nvidia actually fixed that (one of the few things they ever fix!) but if I boot my computer and don't login immediately the temps hit 60 and it's real hard to get the card to use manual speeds again.

I've seen similar results when putting 4870 fan speeds to manual or using the hotfix even.

I usually tend to buy Ati,Asus or Powercooler. However I always replace the stock cooler, so I pick anyone and just slap a S1 + turbo module on it or passive and you are good to go.

I bought my first ATI card in many years, the Visiontek 4870. Performance has been great and I have had zero issues. I don't know what all the fuss is about temperatures, I just play my games. I do hear the fan speed up occasionally, but it's not that loud.

I'm also waiting on better cooling solutions: TOXIC, IceQ, etc. Or at the very least a BIOS upgrade across the board for the reference coolers to tweak the fan a little more without having to do it through profiles.

What about individual game profiles? Would I have to make sure that every single game profile had the fan speed hack in it for it to work all the time while changing in and out of games?

I can understand early adopters having to due this but its been a month now and a proper bios fix from board manufacturers is now due. I don't think the wait will be much longer but its really bugging me because I'm ready to buy NOW

Bring on the 4870 "TOXIC" !!! ~ Blue PCB plz :)

BTW, I like VisionTek, Sapphire, ASUS or HIS (Probably in that order too).

Try Nvidia, they never fixed Auto fan speed on the 9800gtx. Runs randomly between 4-39% and often goes down in speed when the temp goes up. They also never completely made manual 100% run at 100% all the time either... at least ATI offered a fix!

I too am ready to buy now, but I'd rather not install a cooler because if anything does go wrong, it is nice to have a warranty to ensure I at least get some time out of it.

I like HIS IceQ because it blows out the back of the case. All the Atomic/Toxic cards I can recall do not. It is true that it heats up the rest of your case which is a problem especially if you overclock.
