No. Monopoly is something adults buy for teens to get them to go away and shut up for as long as possible. It is by far the most brainless, tedious game ever invented.

Yep, anyone that plays for more than 30 minutes and can't figure out how bad it is is a huge loser.

My favorite, but be warned it's best played with 4 to 6 people, No more no less.

Great 2 person game like chess, but the can be learned in five minutes, yet take years to master.

 
Loaded Questions-if you are playing people that you know at least casually. If a new person is in the group, their answers can be boring.

Cranium - variety of trivia, word puzzles, drawing and the such. The spin-offs generally suck.

Apples to Apples is fun as well.

One of the most fun games ever.

Good story(probably told it on these boards before): We were playing diplomacy, and it was pretty much down to two of my friends "Al" and "Bob".

I was allied with friend Al. With my support, friend Bob would definitely be defeated. I was on Al's side because Bob had attacked me earlier. Bob knows that he is going down, so he goes on an extended campaign to convince Al that I am about to stab him in the back. Al falls for it and attacks me. Bob is now guaranteed to win, since Al has given him the opening he needs. I was aware of this plan, and I had planned to survive such an attack. One turn after his attack, I was actually up a point, but Al had my capitol. We agreed to mutually withdraw, and turn our forces back. I even showed him my orders (which must be written an executed simultaneously in this game), and vice versa. Well, right after I did so, I casually crossed out the order pertaining to him and moved into places he vacated. He was essentially ruined, but Bob was still set to win. Al threw a fit which is still legend among my friends and hasn't played the game since. 😀

I'm sad to see only 2 mentions of Settlers. My friends and I played Risk for awhile and gave Axis and Allies a shot. But we all fell in love with Settlers and started playing the expansions, like Cities and Knights, though I haven't tried Seafarers yet. A bit simpler than Risk, so the games don't take as long. Also, you feel more involved during other players' turns rather than sitting and waiting until it's your turn again.
 
Monopoly. Must get Parkplace Avenue or will flip board. Oh, and Heroes Quest, dang that was a good RPG... until I stomped on all the pieces. No, YOU have an anger management problem😉.
 
I bought apples to apples figuring it would be a fun game to introduce to everyone, including myself. Since buying it, I have had at least 10 friends tell me they not only have played it, but it's awesome. I still have yet to play it myself, but I've never heard such unanimous praise for a board game before...
 
Acquire (my favorite), Ticket to Ride, Formula De, Puerto Rico, Castle Risk, Settlers of Katan

We saw some cool looking games at Dragon*Con last weekend, I wish I could remember the names. There was one where the players have to point toy guns at each other all at once that looked like fun. We played a few games of Werewolf, which was fun and the girls running it were pretty hot, but you would need a lot of people to play.

Edit: the gun game was Ca$h 'n Gun$
 
Without doubt my favorite is Puerto Rico. Settlers of Catan (and the Seafarers expansion) is a close second.
 
My favorites are probably Risk and Axis & Allies.

But the best board game is probably Sorry. So simple, but the sweet revenge trumps all. Make it a 2-couple drinking game (lets say you drink every time you have a man sent back to the beginning) and it is so fun. After a couple rounds of that, play where one person doesn't go Home, but keeps circleing. That person's sole goal is to distroy the other 3 players (of course, they drink each time they are sent home too).

Play drinking Sorry and you'll rarely want to ever go back to any other game. And this comes from someone who drinks only once or twice a year and who never has gotten drunk (I always aim for being tipsy).

We quickly learned no one could be trusted. I was the least untrustworthy player (not be confused with most trustworthy!), and even I backstabbed my permanent ally to shake things up. He was pissed. We played one global variant with limited success, and also Payola was fun while it lasted.
 
Plenty of good suggestions here, glad to see somebody else who likes Puerto Rico. I'll also give a thumbs up to Power Grid, Robo Rally and I'm The Boss.
 
monopoly is actually an average length board game, the house rules people use cause it to last longer by injecting more money into the economy (500 for free parking, 400 for landing on go, etc)
