Looks like a toaster on wheels. Guess the performance is the point of the car because I just can't get over the looks.
 
Yeah, I had a 2002 once...ran it up and down and through Rocky Mountain switchbacks...favorite road was US 12 over Lolo Pass between Missoula, Montana and Lewiston, Idaho...

Hehehe exactly. It's basically so hideous that it's kind of cool in a way. But yes, the performance is the thing :

BMW 2002 = 2200lbs
BMW 128i - 3300lbs

So it's a totally different feel from the current BMW offerings. Granted the lightest BMW I've personally driven was a stripped E30 325i.
 
From what little I understand about BMWs, that's THE platform if you're gonna build a racer out of it.

2002s are amazing. I am still a bit more partial to E30s bodies 2 or 4 door. I do absolutely love the angular nature and the amazing feel of such a light car but looks wise I would take a Euro E30 most days of the week over a 2002 or a e46.

Alot like a 510 or a fiat brava mirafiori are the 2002s.

handling wise I also prefer the e30s stiffer chassis though if you spend enough the 2002 will get there though not as cheaply or easily.

gotta really want a built 2002.

BMW 850 to me is the best BMW of all time. I was in love with that car in high school. If I had space for a 2nd car, that would be it. So beautiful.
I know it was too radically different for BMW at the time, but I think that's why I liked it so much.

850 forever.

That's the only response that I can agree with. All the other ones look like rolling boxes. I actually like the E92 the best with the E46 following close behind.

That being said, I'm not much of a BMW guy. The only BMW I would be interested in IS the M3, or maybe a 3 series. The other models, not interested. Just way too big or way too small.
