Best black and white printer?

It seems most printers are all photo printers. In school, I need to print lots of lecture notes online, resumes, and other misc. I was wondering what printer can I get the most out of for printing regular black and white prints? Any inkjets out there? Or is it all about the laser?

It's all about the laser -- much lower cost-per-page, faster print speeds, much sharper text printing.

What kind of budget? FYI, I finally had to replace my decade-old HP 4ML with a Brother HL-5040 and am happy with it so far.

You can get really cheap lasers for under $100 though for high-volume printing, better toner cart capacity and faster print speed you probably want to buy something at least as good as my Brother ($217 + shipping at buy.com). The best step up from it is probably a HP 2300L for $550.

laser cost per page is right. quality of output is also superior, true crisp text on any sh*t paper, not that fuzzy sh*t you get even on premium inkjet paper. half assed color from a low end/medium inkjet is expensive and overrated. better to get kinkos to print color and other places to develop your digital photos professionally.

i ebayed a refurb laserjet 1100 for 70 shipped. came with toner too works just fine. but if you look in the sunday ads, places have lasers for under 100 after rebate. lasers also have replacable parts, so they are fixable with wear to some extent

I just bought a canon 450i from staples for under $70 with extra black ink($7) and found a place online (monsterink) that sells color and black carts for $1.25 each. It's a nice printer, nothing special but it should last for a few years.

It is all about Lasers in B&W for speed and nowadays Price- Performance (ie Samsung,HP)

I have just ordered the hp 6l, from ebay for $60 - excellent quality - even if it lasts me just one toner it is cheaper than using my 875dc for printing. the only problem I have is that I cant workout how to turn it off it turns off after a while but I can find out where to turn it off manually.
