Best beer/belgian ale/barley wine EVER

So I went to happy hour on the firm's tab today. Nice belgian restaurant with a huge beer selection. Found the best beer I've ever tasted in my life in the Gouden Carolus Grand Cru of the Emperor. Sweet and Malty with a hint of Caramel and almonds, it was a real treat to drink. When I got up I discovered it was a very strong beer too (~10% alcohol by volume).

Anyone else had this beer? If not, I HIGHLY recommend it.

Still a separate class of beer though.

...but OP, why did you mention barley wine? That is a almost a totally different beast in itself.

Because the Gouden Carolus is 10.5% alcohol by volume, and that is getting into barley wine territory (although admittedly they don't taste even close to the same).

The best high alcohol beer I've tasted is St. Bernardus Abt 12. It's surprisingly smooth for having so much "oomph" (10.5%). All barleywine beers I've tried are awful.

one of my favorites is sierra nevada's bigfoot. good stuff, but i need to stockpile it when it becomes available because its seasonal.

Yeah, Grand Cru of the Emperor is definitely one of my top 5 beers (and probably ties with rochefort 10 for best belgian dark strong ale/quad)

The Grand Cru is close to the Abt. 12 in style, but better imo. People have told me its even better aged... I've never been able to keep one around for long enough to test that hypothesis.

Yeah, I've heard that too. I'm going to try and pick up a bottle or two on the web and cellar them for a few years. Never in my life have I tasted a beer like that. Granted, I'm new to Belgian ales so I have a lot of tasting to do.

Amen! My friend and I have drank over 30 bottles of it in the last year. Very good stuff.

I can't get into the strong Belgians. Chimay Bleu is ok though. I do like a good big beer though. Big Foot is good but I prefer the Double Bastard.

On the big beer subject, has anyone tried Samichlaus?

dogfishhead make a good IPA. it's about 10%. they also have one that is 24%, it's way too bitter.

they have 6%, 9%, and ~20% IPAs. i think the sweetness/maltyness balances out the hops in their more potent brews, but maybe that's just me

The Delirium Nocturnum is better, IMHO. 😉

Ooooh the Nocturum is awesome stuff.

Some Additional favorites include: Chimay Blue, Westmalle Tripel, Orval, Ommegang Three Philosophers, Allagash 4, Allagash Interlude, St Bernardus Abt 12, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout
And my favorite non belgian style ales are: Rogue Chocolate Stout, Rogue Old Crusty, Goose Island Imperial IPA, and Three Floyds Robert The Bruce Scottish Ale (which I think is way underrated)

you can buy these beers in America?

Heck yea, you need to find your nearest beer bar and open yourself up to the world of beers! 🙂

I used to drink the Rogue Mocha Porter a lot, if you like chocolate stouts, have you ever tried Young's Double Chocolate Stout? I switched to that after Rogue's got boring.

While we're on the topic of non-belgians, I have to recommend someone try Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel. It's basically a cross between a Belgian, and an IPA. Very interesting taste, but quite good.

Oh, and whoever was talking about St. Bernardus Abt 12, that stuff is definitely awesome, but I don't think it's 10.5 .. thought it was 8.5? I do love my Belgian beers though .. fantastic stuff. I'm a HUGE Unibroue fan. Anything they make, I'll drink. Technically not from Belgian, but they make Belgian styles.

For those of you who consider yourself Beer aficionados, I invite you to take a look at this bottle menu (ok, GeoCities is being lame, once I get home I'll stick the menu on some other space, it's worth a look) from the bar where I work (3 beers on cask, 32 on tap, 200+ in bottles) and see how many you've had. I can say that I've pretty much had damn near everything on the list. Tons of good suggestions if you're looking for new tastes too.

I just had a bottle of Judgment Day from Lost Abbey the other day.. and wow, that was a beer (and 10.5%).

This thread makes me wanna have an ATOT meet at The Brickskeller 😉
