hoping for something like a hybrid coil / foam most all my other mattresses are novafoam or Posturepedic, wonder what the best mattress for the money is. Latex seems like a good choice too.

I use the firmest bed The Original Mattress Factory offered (like laying on plywood basically), and then I added a 2" latex topper and a 1" memory foam topper (because my wife felt the medium firmness latex topper was still too firm for her sleep style). I could do without the memory foam myself as I find they keep much more heat than latex does, but happy wife, happy life. ;)

The mattress is also double sided, so we can rotate it to make it last much longer than a single-sided mattress.

That way you can just replace the toppers as they wear out instead of the whole bed since the padding is what fails first for the most part, and you can really customize the bed to your specific body. The bed and the toppers are going on 7 years now, and they still are in great shape.

so this one or something similar? I think my latex topper was around 250$ for my last king. it def is falling apart now, which topper of latex did you get?

looks like a east coast mattress store, 250 extra to ship 1350 for ultra firm with box spring (which i never want or use ). wonder what sheets fit over 2 toppers and a 11 inch mattress.

Here's the topper I bought: https://www.amazon.com/Green-Natural-Latex-Mattress-Topper/dp/B00UYG95T2/

I believe this was the mattress I bought (although I ordered in in-store), and I had them customize it by using extra firm edge wiring to keep it super firm even on the edges. I think I paid an extra $30 for that feature. https://www.originalmattress.com/orthopedic-ultra-firm-mattress-set

So between the 2" topper and the 11" mattress, you should have quite a few options for sheets on Amazon. Even with the extra 1" memory foam and mattress pad on ours, we ordered sheets that fit mattresses up to 16" thick. Here's the set we bought and their decent enough (nothing fancy, but they've held up well):

While I was linking the latex toppers in this thread, I noticed they had lower prices from when I ordered mine.

So I took the chance and ordered a 1" soft version, and it arrived today. I removed the god-awful memory foam topper, and put the new latex topper on top of the 2" medium firmness latex topper (which she said was too firm for her liking). I am hoping it is soft enough for my wife, but I think it feels so much better. She just went to bed for the night, and seemed to think it felt decent upton first testing it out, but I won't know if she'll OK the change permanently until she's slept on it for a few days.

Yeah, I spent quite a bit of time researching latex toppers before deciding on what bed and toppers to get when we knew we needed a new bed.

From what I read, Talaway is considered the best quality latex (and softer of the two), but is more expensive. Dunlop latex is definitely more economical but denser, and that's what my topper is made from (and I've been completely satisfied with its performance and it has held up very well). The problem with researching something like this is 99.9% of the "articles" are either ads made by companies selling the product, or from people who get free products to promote it and who offer "discounts" with referral IDs and links. Here's a simple one that explains it (from a company that makes and sells both types of latex).

I've recommended it before, but will recommend it again. Helix makes some very nice affordable hybrid mattresses with a lot of customization. I've had my king for around 5 years now and it still looks and feels new.

It looks like they've come out with a second model called the Luxe which is about twice the price and has some other features.

I can't tell, but it looks like they may be using memory foam now rather than latex. I seem to recall when I bought mine they were using latex.

My wife and I have a sleep number bed, now 20 years old, it saved me during the 5 years leading up to my hip replacement surgery. It is also easy to disassemble and repair...replaced the internal foam pad, o-rings, 1 bladder. She needs a harder surface than I do.

Would those latex mattress toppers help with shoulder pain caused by an old (25 years old or so) extra firm mattress? If so would you recommend the 2" or 3" for a side sleeper? If I would happen to pick up a mattress later on it would probably be a similar firmness if that matters. Also keep us updated on how you like the 2" med and 1" soft topper combo.

It works good for me. I was good to go with just the 2" medium firmness topper since I primarily sleep on my back and stomach, but my wife is a side-sleeper, and it was too firm for her. So I went ahead and bought the memory foam topper for her, and she liked the feel of the bed with that.

However, the memory foam was always to hot for me, and I sank too much into it, and while not horrible, it wasn't what I'd call good either. Thankfully after three days using the new topper, my wife says she doesn't feel sore at all, but she definitely likes very soft pillow-top mattresses (and she still thinks it feels a little firm).

So if a person is pretty much a side sleeper, I'd say the 3" soft Dunlop is likely your safest bet. You could always do a 2" medium Dunlop, and put a 1" Talalay soft on top of that, and that would likely be soft enough for your sleep style. I'd go to a showroom in your area that has latex mattresses, and try out a few to see how the medium vs. soft density feels when you lay on it.

Thanks for your advice and sharing your experiences. I used to be a stomach sleeper until I hurt my back 3 years ago. It took months but I forced myself to sleep on my side with a body pillow. My shoulders have been bothering me ever since the switch and sometimes my lower back feels stiff like my hips have been sagging into the mattress all night. That sounds weird considering I'm only 5'5" and about 130lbs. I try to rotate the mattress and boxspring every now and then but it about kills me to rotate the heavy mattress by myself.

Your advice to try them out before I buy is solid. I may be able to do that this week. Thanks again!

I've had a Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid for a couple of years and absolutely love it. I bought it in medium and it's perfect for me. My wife recently had her third back surgery and needs a firm mattress now so I went shopping again. I like it so much I ordered another one but this time two twins to fill our king bed. Another medium for me and a firm for her side. We paid just a bit under $2k a couple years ago but they are on sale now for a bit less.

i feel like it was delivered about 3 weeks ago, slept on it by itself and was horrified how hard it was, awful sleep. used the 2" latex topper i had with a topper case for another 75$ and have been sleeping great. I have yet to add another 1" soft topper ill check how much extra room the sheets have first then order another 1" talalay soft topper
