I use the firmest bed The Original Mattress Factory offered (like laying on plywood basically), and then I added a 2" latex topper and a 1" memory foam topper (because my wife felt the medium firmness latex topper was still too firm for her sleep style). I could do without the memory foam myself as I find they keep much more heat than latex does, but happy wife, happy life.
The mattress is also double sided, so we can rotate it to make it last much longer than a single-sided mattress.
That way you can just replace the toppers as they wear out instead of the whole bed since the padding is what fails first for the most part, and you can really customize the bed to your specific body. The bed and the toppers are going on 7 years now, and they still are in great shape.
Yeah, I spent quite a bit of time researching latex toppers before deciding on what bed and toppers to get when we knew we needed a new bed.still waiting on a sale as i don't even sleep on that bed, hopefully my next costco run they will have a extra firm i can load ontop my suv, have the toppers all ready to go (ordered another 2" medium and 1" soft" and yea they are lower priced then the first 2" latex i bought before, ... but i do forget which one i bought it seems there are 2 diff latex processes.
It works good for me. I was good to go with just the 2" medium firmness topper since I primarily sleep on my back and stomach, but my wife is a side-sleeper, and it was too firm for her. So I went ahead and bought the memory foam topper for her, and she liked the feel of the bed with that.Would those latex mattress toppers help with shoulder pain caused by an old (25 years old or so) extra firm mattress? If so would you recommend the 2" or 3" for a side sleeper? If I would happen to pick up a mattress later on it would probably be a similar firmness if that matters. Also keep us updated on how you like the 2" med and 1" soft topper combo.
Thanks for your advice and sharing your experiences. I used to be a stomach sleeper until I hurt my back 3 years ago. It took months but I forced myself to sleep on my side with a body pillow. My shoulders have been bothering me ever since the switch and sometimes my lower back feels stiff like my hips have been sagging into the mattress all night. That sounds weird considering I'm only 5'5" and about 130lbs. I try to rotate the mattress and boxspring every now and then but it about kills me to rotate the heavy mattress by myself. It works good for me. However, the memory foam was always to hot for me, and I sank too much into it, and while not horrible, it wasn't what I'd call good either. Thankfully after three days using the new topper, my wife says she doesn't feel sore at all, but she definitely likes very soft pillow-top mattresses (and she still thinks it feels a little firm).
So if a person is pretty much a side sleeper, I'd say the 3" soft Dunlop is likely your safest bet. You could always do a 2" medium Dunlop, and put a 1" Talalay soft on top of that, and that would likely be soft enough for your sleep style. I'd go to a showroom in your area that has latex mattresses, and try out a few to see how the medium vs. soft density feels when you lay on it.
i feel like it was delivered about 3 weeks ago, slept on it by itself and was horrified how hard it was, awful sleep. used the 2" latex topper i had with a topper case for another 75$ and have been sleeping great. I have yet to add another 1" soft topper ill check how much extra room the sheets have first then order another 1" talalay soft toppercostco has the Sealy mount auburn king 13" for 160$ off on the 14th, looks like ima grab that one and add my toppers, should be mission accomplished! ill report back around then before the sale ends with a review of my own i hope.
