Avon is our spot. Beautiful beach, but not too crowded.

Avon is awesome. can be a very buggy area though ~August. I like the Avon, Pea Island area. Kitty Hawk is nearby, so it's worth the visit.

A personal favorite is Core Banks in the far south, but that involves a ferry and rustic cabin living or tent camping on the beach. But it's almost completely locals and if you're into fishing and just chilling on the beach, it's about as good as it gets. ...but don't tell anyone about this, damnit!

Also look into Topsail Island. Small, quiet area. Not as spendy as OBX.

and Atlantic is my favorite, I guess, because that was our annual vacation, and I have buddies with some places down there. It also tends to be laid-back, though I usually go in the off-season.

I've flown in the Myrtle Beach when I visit wife's family in South Carolina, and I've never seen so many old tourists in my life.

The core banks is great if you are into surf fishing. Hard to find a better spot. Spent quite a bit of time of Portsmouth island myself. But I am a peace and quiet kind of guy. If you need more than the sun, a beach, and the ocean to entertain you, you might want to look elsewhere.

OP - One other option to consider is Tybee Island in Georgia. My brother got married there a few years ago and it was beautiful. Lots of people though.

Agreed... Outer bank is no where near as crowded or a tourist trap... You can travel just a few miles to have a beach more to yourself... Or all to yourself a few more miles down.

Be careful on Ocracoke island when exploring "down the beach." There is (or at least was) a nudist colony on the island a while ago.

Edit - OP - if you discover the nudists -> pics or it didn't happen.

When i was younger our family went to Ocean Isle about 4 or 5 summers in a row. We often went with other family friends. It was pretty chill for family beach time. I would recommend considering it.
