So its been proven that the intel D805 can pass 3.0 Ghz easily, and even hit 4 with water cooling. People always rave about the opteron 165, and 148 and how they overclock well. There is also the processors that start off at a higher performance level, like the X2 3800, 4400, etc, and the intel 900 series and up. So what is the best performance for the dollar? I'm talking good gaming performace. Nothing crazy, but solid for today's 3D and beyond. It seems to me like the D805 is the winner. What do you guys think????

Depends on what applications you will be using it for. This topic is getting to be very old. I still like the 3800 or 165 for overclocking because you can save money on other components and still max out your cpu. With the 805 you will need a motherboard that will cost you twice as much. When conroe hits the market everything changes and Ill be on that intel bandwagon.

Yeah I saw that in one case study, they used a $300 motherboard to overclock the pentium D805!!! That seems like a bit much, but doesn't the 3800 and the 165 cost close to $300? In which case you would spend 100-150 on the mobo... But maybe save on the PSU and the RAM? What would be a good setup for the 3800 or 165?

No need to spend extra on the Ultra-D chipset, the NF4 Infinity line have great overclocking potential and cost $30-40 less.

Mucker is pretty much correct. I have that same mobo as well. Great stable ocing cheap mobo. Definitely an Opty 144/146($130-$150) or a 3200 E3 venice ($100 or so used) are the best bang 4 buck.

Of course some peeps lately been selling X2 3800's for around $200. Thats pretty nice bang 4 buck as well.

OC'ed Sempron if you don't need dual-core :D
An OC'ed Sempy 3400+ (2.7GHz) served me nicely till I moved to a A64 Venice.
