"They are NOT very good. They do NOT rock. They're about as bad as PSU's get."
You forgot Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. :p

How would you give an operative definition for "rock" for a psu anyway?

This $40 and 650W Powmax will probably give a really nice big BANG for less money than one of those 4th-of-July fireworks packages. ;)

That Corsair 650W unit is pretty nice. I just picked up a 550W Corsair from Buy.com.

Yeah, I totally missed out on the $50 850W Cooler Master because I knew I was going to be out of town so it would have sat outside my place for two weeks.

i got the 850w real power for $60, not quite $50, but even at $100 isn't htat a great bargain...

to the OP, not that im an expert, but ZipZoomFly has the cooler master real power pro 750 for $80, which is the same price as the corsair 550vx at newegg, but after rebate...

you can always cancel...

and JG didn't give a definitive which is better, though I think he leaned at the same price for $80 towards the cooler master, but thats my interpretation...

PSU arrived today! damn that was fast for free 7-9 day shipping, lol. must have a warehouse pretty close to PA.
anyway, one thing i completely forgot about was that my PSU mount is on the bottom of my case. I had to install the PSU upside down or the fan would be right up against the bottom of the case.

running it upside down won't hurt will it?

sounds a lot quieter than my old PSU also.

Gravity has no effect on solid state components. Just make sure the intake fan has ample room to suck in air.

Sorry, wasn't complaining, I was just guessing at what I thought you meant and didn't want to speak definitively.

You do realize you also asked him to choose between a VX550 and a Coolermaster 750 Pro....not a Corsair TX650 and the Coolermaster

'no effect' .... you mean *zero* ?
--are you sure?

And if you really think gravity will have no effect on your solid-state components, try an easy experiment ... let them go from your hands over the floor from a good height. :p
:D

ANYWAY, it looks like our OP has got a solid 300+Mhz OC on his Opteron without really "trying" ... something not achievable with the TT 480 watter. Looks like we have a "success"

i had a similar feeling last year when i exchanged my anemic 480w TT 18a on the 12v rail for my current PS and was able to *immediately* get a much better OC on my P4 ... and several further upgrades to even manage 2900 Crossfire. :)

Using bang when PSU shopping isn't something I recommend. Unless you're looking at the Enermax Liberty 620.

A 400 or 500W QUALITY PSU should be fine for the OP system, OC or not.

i had to drop it to 2497 mhz because i tried to play stalker, got about 5 minutes in and it blue screened on me. i haven't done any more testing since then. it did run all night while downloading files though.

You get that a lot - wrong advice. Even using the 50% rule it's still adequate. But as I said a quality supply. I'd take a quality 450W supply over a 750W dope box any day.

Right.. and you don't know what that 480W was. If it was 480W peak, rated at 25°C, with a derating curve that only allowed 50% output at 40°C... it wouldn't be adequate.

we know what it was - You linked to it and i had one :p

it is extremely underpowered - *i* told you it was underpowered and stand behind my statement ... your *particular* 480w Thermaltake - from '03 when it was "quality" - has only 18a on the 12v rail

You guys [and gals] really think it is enough?

if so, i think i still have mine i could sell you :p

Hence my emphasis on Quality. I'm not saying buying a >700W psu is going to bring back Elvis from the dead. (if that were the case those 1.6kW Ultra's would be flying off the shelves! ) Nothing wrong with too much PSU for sure but no sense in draining the checkbook on it either.

And my emphasis on old PSes not cutting it anymore for modern HW

there is no such thing as 'too rich' ... 'too smart' .. or 'too much power' :p
:D
quality is implied

especially if we are only talking a C-note
