Best bang for the buck computer build $1000

Hey all,

I am currently in the market to upgrade my computer but have been out of the hardware loop for a couple years.

I am looking to spend roughly $1000 (canadian) off either www.newegg.ca, www.ncix.com or tigerdirect.ca.

I took a gander and looked at some reviews, but there seems to be just so many options its a little daunting. Basically I am asking for your advice on the best "bang for the buck" computer parts I can buy at the moment. I only need a tower, so please keep that in mind.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

PC will be a home computer. Gaming, watching movies, internet browsing and other general entertainment.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$1000 Canadian, ish.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

Canada

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

None

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

Monitor and other peripherals, just need the tower.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Yes

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Default

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

1680 x 1050, or higher of the same ratio.

Thanks for your time fellas.

You are much more likely to get helpful information if you answer the questions posed in this sticky: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=80121

Also, a very quick reading of posts similar to yours (i.e. "please help me build a system") shows that you will get a lot of helpful information if you show at least some evidence that you have read some of these threads and have some initial ideas where you want to go from a hardware perspective. The replies might shoot your initial ideas down (sometimes pretty harshly) but that's a heck of a lot better than total silence.

Good luck in your build.

Thank you for the reply, I did infact read the sticky and that is why I included, budget, location, usage and if i'd be overclocking or not and such in my initial post. I have edited it to be more sticky friendly.

Again, thanks for your time.

You'll get a lot more performance out of mfenn's. Might even be able to snag a used 5870....

Then again, unless you're going to upgrade your resolution...a 5870 might be overkill. You could get a cheaper one now, and save money for a better one later. (a 5770/GTX460 will play almost anything @ that rez)

Thank you for all the help fellas, especially Mfenn. I purchased pretty much everything you laid out there with a couple tweaks.

Much appreciated. Cheers.
