You're a great dad and I'm sure he's a great son. You should have no trouble listening to your stereo whenever you want. ;)

PS, I've been planning to get a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis the moment I get a different job that doesn't make an economy car nearly as appealing as it is.

infinity is good, its what i have in the rear:) 69 not a bad price either, i got mine at 100 or so. just don't run stuff off a cr@ppy headunit amp, shell out for a decent separate amp to drive nice speakers. otherwise your sound won't be very good and well, you might blow em. my 40x4 headunit blew the infinities twice before i got the message:p good thing it was during return period. sound became much cleaner after i got an amp. it just sounds lousy with just the headunit amp.

"my 40x4 headunit blew the infinities..."

<Gulp> Tell me you had it cranked REALLY high to cause that! :Q

His Aiwa hasn't "blown" the factory speakers, so it should be OK... I hope! I'm buying these from a ! non-authorized dealer, so I may not be able to get 'em fixed if/when they puke!

Hi,

Typically, a speaker is blown by an underpowered amplfier rather than an overpowered amplifier.

That seems counter-intuitive, so let me explain.

If you have an underpowered amplifier (such as a head unit) and you turn the volume way up, the amplfier starts to "clip". Without explaining that term too much (you can find info on the internet), it basically puts out a damaging signal to the speakers. What a lot of people would describe as speaker distortion is actually a result of the amplfier reaching it's limits and "clipping".

It's this clipping that blows speakers more often than not. Since head unit's do not have a very powerful amplifier, people often push them to the limit which results in blown speakers. If you don't play your music at very high volumes, you have nothing to worry about. But if you find yourself constantly playing at the loudest volume that "seems" to be safe, you will probably damage your speakers.

It was on that run that I noticed how poor the speakers are. I figured I'd just slap some in for $75.00 or so. I quickly realized that it would cost a bit more, so here I am.

I'm in cleveland! I could have given you a grand audio tour, and would've even sold you a small 50x2 amp for like $50 bucks, and could have gotten you some nice local deals on speaks...!!

Ah-hah! I finally got to use the Chrysler LHS with the awesome factory stereo again. I listened closely to it coming home, and it was fantastic! I was a little disappointed after installing the Infinity speakers in the G. Marquis. Slightly crisper, but no $150.00 difference over the factory speakers. Well, after listening to the LHS system again, I just knew it had to be a sub in there somewhere. I looked in the trunk and found a massive amp strapped to the right side wall. It was bigger than a cigar box and had the name Infinity on it. Never did locate the sub, but this proves it's there.

I'm spoiled now. Not about to install one in the G. Marquis... for a while anyway. After all, it isn't my car, but when I do replace my tired Lincoln, I'll have a full blown amp/sub combo added to it!

BTW, just for reference, what's the lowest price you can get away with for decent quality 8" sub and amp? One to match that 240 Watt Infinity System in the LHS?

Ornery - don't worry about blowing the References. I don't know what that guy was doing but it's really really hard to blow References with any head unit. (I've had my 652i's for over a year running off 3 different Pioneer HUs, my 692is for about 3 months and no problems whatsoever - I've cranked it up and never had any problems with it)

Regarding your LHS - http://www.automotive-technology.com/projects/concorde/ - thats the only info I could find on it - 8 speakers doesn't necessarily mean it one of those is a sub. And amped speakers will always sound better than an unamped system. I don't care what head unit you have. You could install a 75w 4 channel amp and it should make a difference, although the References aren't known more for being great unamped speakers as opposed to amped. You could probably get a decent 5 channel + 8" sub for around $300-$350, but I'm not really an authority on car audio.

I just bought the Infinity Reference 522i speakers from Crutchfield (Link) and connected them to my new Pioneer DEH1400 CD Receiver. For some reason, they don't sound as good as I hoped. I bought them to replace my Honda Civic's stocks, but they don't sound much better. Music gets really distorted when nearing high volumes, and the bass doesn't seem all that good. I guess I will go check out the speakers at Circuit City or Best Buy and then compare them to my setup.

the bass will be lacking when you power it off of a headunit, especially an aiwa one...they just don't have the power to really hit hard enough. A fair estimate would be 15 rms to each channel with that HU. I used to power my 6x9s (infinity kappa's) off of a amp running 75x2. Note: Even though it could easily handle even more than that, don't go too loud, the reason I dont run amplified 6x9s anymore is my hearing isnt as good as it used to be, and it was from those kappas, high tones are more damaging to your ears then low tones...

The main reason the chrysler sounds goodis because it has amplified speakers. that 8 speaker system is in my dad's car and I must admit it does sound good for being stock, the low tones come from the 2 mid base speakers in the sides of the 3rd row of seating...
