My 939 Opteron hit 2.7ghz but I ran it at 2.56ghz as it did that with just a minor bump in voltage, so it stayed very cool. Those aren't too bad on Ebay, looks like they are staying under $100. That would be the easiest upgrade. It seems that many people on this site think you need a 4ghz E8500 to play games, it's simply not true. Also, on the AMD side you can't beat the 5000+BE for overclocking. I've seen plenty of those getting to about 3.3ghz.

Wow, this thread took off. Well, if anyone's interested, I think I've decided to go with just a stop-gap measure for now and pick up a 939 X2. The performance difference between that and an E2xxx is not large enough to me to make it worth the investment of time and money into a whole new mobo/cpu/ram system. I'll sell my current x850xt and the 939 opteron and the whole upgrade from x850xt/Opty 146 to a 9600gt/x2 cpu will run me under $150 and involve very little hassle. I think I'll wait until I can get something which will give me a very serious boost, possibly the Nehalem, to go to the new generation hardware.

I usually don't keep up with hardware news until it is time to upgrade, so this discussion has been very useful in getting me up to speed. Thanks, folks.

Where did you find the cheap S939 X2? Mine cost $65 in November, but I haven't seen them around that price since.

My 9600gt cost me only $110 AR. I figure I'll get around $60 for my vid card and cpu leaving me with a $100 to get the X2 (and many 3800s still go for around $70 on the bay).

Ok, I didn't think about selling your old stuff. I just wanted to make sure you understood that the s939 chips were much more expensive than their AM2 conterparts. I got around $60 for my 3500+ and a X800XL just before Christmas, so that is probably a good estimate. Hopefully you get even more.

Damn, I wish this thread had been around last week - I would've sold you my X2-3800 cheap instead of using Ebay. I much prefer to help out a fellow AT-er. ;)

I'm pretty much doing the same thing that you are - waiting for Nehalem and migrating to the newest platform in 2009. I wonder if AMD will have anything truly competitive by then...

Fry's had an E4500 and ECS MB for 99.00 a couple of weeks ago. This week they have a 6550 and MB for 150.00. I got the 99.00 combo and it OKed to 2.93 just by setting the FSB to 1066 instead of 800. Sweet deal. This is what replaced my old 939 3800x2 system. It is light years faster doing any kind of video editing/encoding and I was able to upgrade to a PCIe vid card too.

If you jump to another brand of proc, check on the board first before the proc -- your other HW i.e. AGP graphics are highly variable from one brand to another. I like intel chips more, but migrating my Radeon AGP card had better options on AM2/939 boards.

you also have to get new ram, even though it's fairly cheap now, getting rebates are still a pain in the ass, not worth the effort IMO, just get a 939 x2.

Well, I (hopefully) have an Opteron 165 on its way. We'll see how it overclocks and whether I'll get much by way of an improvement over the 146.
