While I hold no illusion that you can bring all these sectors together, I'd like to get people's opinion on what they consider the best that is out there. You don't have to fill out every section, only that which you're comfortable with:

1. BMW 5.0L V-10 (M5)
3. DSG (Audi)
4. Honda (so easy to drive)
7. Lexus
8. BMW

A lot of these are debatable, especially 8. What constitutes the best drive? Comfort? Performance?

1) BMW's S85 (M5/M6 engine)
2) BMW M57 Twin-Turbo (BMW 535d engine, IIRC)
3) ---
4) Ferrari 6-speed paddle-shift manual
5) Mercedes "7g-tronic" (7-speed automatic)
6) ---
7) Mercedes
8) Ferrari. Not that I've ever driven one, but I'm going to say this is a safe bet.

What's so special about these BMW engines? I always thought the Honda engines were ultra-reliable? Is BMW's as well?

Btw, can someone explain to me why the BMW V10 is so great? Compared to the LS7, it's more expensive, about the same power, and weighs more.

4. 4 speed? Chrysler A-883 New Process. Indestructible 4 speed used behind the Hemi.

5. best automatic transmission is the Chrysler 727, the most reliable, indestructible auto ever made.

While I do love the M5 and M6, I'm gonna have to agree here.

The LS7 overall I would say is a better engine. Smaller footprint, lighter and similar power output.

We have a winner. I get almost 30 MPG in my series II, and I can keep it below 2500 RPMs and still out accelerate traffic.

1) Porsche 3.6 litre air-cooled flat 6. There are smoother, cleaner, more reliable engines out there, but nothing, absolutely nothing, has that magic sound.

2) Any of the modern Mercedes diesels.

3) Gotta go with the GM Allison transmission. Virtually un-breakable.

4) Tremec T56. Virtually un-breakable.

5) See #3.

6) Original Land Rover. Those damn things went anywhere and could be fixed by a 10 year old.

7) Porsche 944 (post 1985) and 968. Everything is in reach and comfortable for hard driving.

8) Porsche, any. There's just no other car I've driven that can duplicate the feel.

Everybody's best will be different because everybody has different tastes/needs/priorities. The 2.5 WRX is an amazing engine for its size. But the VW aircooled 1600 is the most prolific engine in the world. Maybe that's best? Or what about the Chevy 350?

Nothing can be the #1 when things are sooooo different.

It's one hell of a smooth running engine too. Truly a great engine. Maybe the Series III will be better with the new Aluminum intake.
