Looking to replace my Dad's aging GTS250 1GB with a new DX11 card. It would be for 1920x1200 and my nephews like to play games on it, like CODBO, MOH, BC2 etc. What card is best for under $200?

Thanks

No card offers a reasonable performance boost from a GTS250 for <$200 at 1920x1200 imo. The only cards that kinda fit this requirement are a GTX460 or a HD6850. Check out their performance and see if what they offer is enough for you to consider worthy.

5850 (AR) and 6850 both can be had for around $180. Both tend to OC very well (all 3 of my 5850's do around 900/2200 w/stock voltage). The 5850 generally is slightly better overall in most games, especially ones that do not use heavy tessellation (Crysis, Metro 2033, Battlefield BC2) the 6850 excels better in some titles with it and might have an edge with upcoming games. Cannot go wrong with either really and both will demolish the 250.

Id try to pickup a ASUS HD 6850.

They have non reference coolers on them, around 30% better, and really seem to Overlock well (near 6870 levels stable)

Can find around $200

The 5870 is in the 470 range for performance.

The stock 5870 is a good bit faster than a stock 470.

Anyone can see what you did there and didn't even link to a source for those benchmarks. Could have been with release drivers for all we know. Anyway, Genx is right, 5870 is at GTX470 level.

How about this one then keys? It should look familiar source wise, it's taken from the latest review (hence the inclusion of the GTX580), and it even tests one of the games mentioned in the OP!
And it shows the HD5870 being between the GTX470 and GTX480 (closer to the 480).

Also Medal of Honor uses the same engine for MP as BFBC2, so it kind of might cover that game too.

And here's Xbitlabs from their GTX580 review, hopefully using recent drivers, on Modern Warfare 2 (which uses a similar engine I think to COD:BLOPS)

This one isn't even funny.
(And I chose Xbitlabs because it's one of the two review/news websites in my bookmarks, and it has CoD MW2. I would have looked elsewhere if they hadn't had it, but if you dislike my use of that site, feel free to search elsewhere).

And please remember we're looking at 1920x1200 as per the OP, so the fact that they might be equal or differently placed at other resolutions is meaningless.

Nice to have a discussion with you keys where I argue against your carefully presented points, aka "What this other dude said with no evidence is true, so says I also with no evidence".

You could have done better than that Keys.. atleast a few benches to counter Arkadrel's post. Like this one

Is that benchmark the single player or multiplayer? (They use different engines, SP is Unreal Engine 3, MP is Dice's Frostbite engine).
They should ideally test it twice.

Also, keys doesn't actually back up his assertions, he just often seems to post statements and then lets others provide actual evidence to support or disprove him, rather than doing that work himself.

Its SP.. and that test was not extensive at all. MP performance should be equal to BF:BC2, or atleast representative of MOH's MP performance.

Yeah, tell me about it. :p

480>5870>470

But getting back to the OP, i'm going to second the recomendations for a 6850.

If you can get the 5870 for ~$200 id go for that. Mine runs everything at 1900x1200 Maxed out everything AA/AF.

If you have to go with ATI, then the 6850. But as far as prices go the GTX 460, as they are configured with standard factory overclocks, are just as fast as 6850s and are cheaper and are a better buy.

The Sapphire 5870 is the absolute best deal going on now though.

well, 6850 is actually ~ gtx 460 1gb and they are generally similar in price and oc'ing ability.

Can't we all just agree that gtx 460<5850<gtx 470<5870<gtx 480? I thought that we figured this out ages ago. For the record, 5870 is a closer to gtx 470 than gtx 480 however.

anyways, for $214 the 5870 is clearly the card to get. otherwise get a 6850 and oc the heck out of it.
