best Athlon XP to get?

Well I have an old Athlon 1Ghz I'm upgrading for my brother and trying to find the best Athlon XP proc to get him. I'm getting the Asus A7n8X nforce2 board for him.

I want to keep it preferably under $150 ($200 at the most). What's all this noise about the Tbred [x] core processors that are super overclockable and what not?

thanks!

Well, if you are planning on overclocking, I think a good XP to look @ would be the 2100+ OEM @ Newegg. It has the newest Tbred "B" core which your Asus Nforce 2 should be able to freely adjust the multiplier on without any CPU modification. A good deal of people are getting these as high 2.4ghz with good cooling and a good system. It should be a fairly safe bet that you could reach @ least 2ghz with one. Last time I checked, they were going for $100 with free shipping..🙂

sweet! that was the initial one I picked (aka in my basket at newegg...man i've spent so much money there the past two days)....the 2100 xp "palomino?" that correct?

it's selling for $90 there now! sweet!

thanks for the advice!

what about a good case? I just have this case picked out for him now:

i myself have the coolermaster atc 111...but i don't know what a good, cheap case would be. 🙁

This is a great case and great price. You do need to buy a PSU sperately, but a decent 300-400W should be under $50. I think they have the Sparkle 300W for ~$25. That case is a bit large, but the free shipping deal on it is awesome.

🙂

k that's what i thought...thanks.....i figured they were different...shite...thanks again!

edit: was also looking at that case since i see a lot of modders use it..it is a bit big but i like the swing out door...thanks! oh i already have a psu for him...so no biggie there.
