Best area around Los Angeles to stay for a week?

The wife and I have decided to fly out to Los Angeles for a week next month for vacation. We went to Vegas on our honeymoon, but that's the only time we've both been past Memphis westward, so we want to go a bit further and set our feet in the Pacific Ocean this time.

Where are the good parts of LA to stay as vacationers? We were looking at Long Beach and a couple other places, but didn't know for sure. We would like it to be within 30 minutes of the airport. Our plans for our vacation is to basically see some sights we've never seen in person, and generally relax and take it all in.

Make sure you drive up to Santa Barbara for at least a day, if not to stay overnight...the most beautiful, romantic place <sigh>

Fly in to Burbank and stay somewhere in Calabasas or Agoura Hills. Drive into Malibu and Santa Monica, up to Ventura, Santa Barbara. Visit wineries in Santa Ynez. That'd make for a fun week for a couple, IMO.

If you're going to spend an entire week on the west coast, I'd suggest renting a convertible and driving up to Carmel/Monterey. It's just incredibly beautiful and it's quite romantic for a couples' getaway.

Stay in downtown LA, its more central to everything. 20mins from LAX, Santa Monica, Hollywood without traffic. You get LA live which is new hang out in central downtown along with variety of restaurants. First timers go visit Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica Peir and 3rd street, Disneyland in Anahiem, old town Pasadena, little Tokyo, Sunset Blvd for night life, Kodak threatre on Hollywood and Highland, Getty Museum in Brentwood, and Graffith Observatory in Los Felis.

Hope this helps, have a great time!

This. If you have the time.

I live in Rancho Palos Verdes (South Bay Area) - It isn't like anything else in LA, in that there is a ton of green, open space, and beautiful unobstructed California coastal views. There isn't much here other than sightseeing, golf, and restaurants, but it's probably worth at least a day.

I second the comment on Santa Barbara- born an raised there, and probably the most beautiful place I have even been.

Id go with this suggestion. I'd also recommend visiting Magic Mountain if the two of you are into roller coasters / theme parks.

i was also born and raised there, meth0s...wonder if we ever knew each other - it's not that big a place. what HS did u go to and what year did u graduate?

and i second the comment on Magic Mountain - was my favorite place to go every summer. AWESOME rollercoasters!

Huntington Beach or Santa Monica if you want to be able to walk around and enjoy the beach without too much driving. It depends what your and your wife's interests are - beach, sight-seeing in Hollywood (which is pretty crappy and dirty), hiking, etc.

Make sure to go to Downtown LA and try all the various foods from different cultures that are there. There is pretty much every race in Los Angeles and you can try out all the great food they all have to offer.
