Best anti-virus for Vista x64?

Hi guys,

My Kaspersky license just expired and I'm wondering what the community consensus is for the best overall anti-virus solution is these days. I'm using Vista x64 if it makes a difference. What I want:

#1) Small footprint memory/cpu wise, this is the main why I've been using Kaspersky for a few years.

#2) Frequent database updates for virus signatures

#3) Effective at detection/removal

#4) I just want anti-virus not a software firewall type thing

Again, my #1 priority is that it is not a system hog like Symantec (or at least what it was a few years ago when I used to use it). I don't mind paying a license fee per year.

I'm probably going to go with Kaspersky again but wanted to see if anything better has come out.

Thanks

I was looking for a good AV myself recently for point #1.

I ended up getting NOD32, because from what I've read, the guys over at ESET have coded this program in Assembly Language so the program is incredibly fast and efficient. It was certainly a step up from AVG which I used for a few years.

I don't know about "best", but I've had no complaints against Avira AntiVir.

I'd definitely give Avira a shot. I usually go with AVG, but I read a review some place about Avira and decided to change things up. Works great so far.

I had some issues with NOD32 and did not renew my subscription in favor of going to AVG Free. I love it. I don't miss NOD32 at all.

Avira and Kaspersky use little memory. There is an odd browser slowdown bug with Kaspersky that a small number of users experience (AT is one of the sites that it occurs on, so if it is fast here with the email scanner enabled, then you are not hit by it).

Take a look at these detection rate tests (pay attention to both the detection rate and false positive rates):

I like Antivir better than Kaspersky, and if I had to pay for an antivirus that would be the one. Give the free version a try and see if you like it. The only significant difference is the lack of POP3 scanning in the free version. I can live without that, but if you can't the pay for version is well priced.

Avast!!! I love it.

The free ones (Avast, AVG, Antivir) are good enough that I couldn't justify paying anyone for antivirus. AVG reminds me of NOD32, it's lightweight and does a good job.

I'd decide between those myself. I did and took AVG, but Avast has its fans too. I'm going to give Avast another try someday if I ever run into problems with AVG like I did NOD32.

Kaspersky. I've never used NOD32, but I'm constantly dealing with people who have conflicts with other software due to it.

Free, when it comes to "antivirus?" No thanks. As the virus market these days is huge, rather pay for software that will be updated and is top notch.

As has been proven time and time again... price isn't necessarily an indicator of software quality.

Anti-Vir for me thanks. 😀
