Limited-class user account + common sense + Kaspersky AntiVirus Personal 5. Or F-Secure, or I hear good things about NOD32 and BitDefender. I happen to be fond of VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i in the enterprise realm...

But remember the first two items there... you can really stack the odds in your favor with a Limited account and common sense

Ultimate Security:

Kaspersky AntiVirus
Hardware Firewall
Windows Firewall(maybe another software firewall if you want)
AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Spyware Blaster
Microsoft Antispyware
100% of every single possible to download Windows Update
Keep all of these programs up to date.

Quite possibly more important than all of the above.......

wait for it...

a bit longer....

COMMON SENSE

Have all of this and you will have a better chance of spontaneously combusting than catching any malware.

I like AVG, I use the full version at work and the free one for my home computers. I have been nothing but happy with it.

I suppose AVG's inferior detection rate is ok for people that can't afford to spend $25 for a real AntiVirus like Kaspersky. :p

I'd just like to reiterate that F-Secure is right up there with Kaspersky. I have used and really like Kaspersky, but I am currently using F-Secure. Besides for the splash screen when XP loads up, I barely even know it is there. I really like F-Secure's blog which everyone can enjoy. BlackLight is another plus.

I use Norton Systemworks Premiere because it has NAV and Ghost packaged for my students and clients. Since we all clone our main drives, we don't run afoul of those really bad viruses. Its just a matter of preference, and we prefer Norton. The other antivirus programs work for those others and they may need them for the really tough trojans, worms and the like, out there. Luckily we live in Hawaii and we haven't seen the real bad attacks yet. Well at least my Mauians and I haven't yet. We're country folk, and so far just lucky.

In my experience the best free antivirus program is Avast! Antivirus. Finds a lot more than Norton ever did for me, i love the ui, and well, it works.

Like mechBgon (our security guru here at Anandtech :) ) said, no antivirus will replace a limited class user account and common sense. And no antivirus will protect you against sheer stupidity.

Time and again I've had to repair / restore trojan and malware ridden PC's from users who thought they were protected because Norton was running when they were downloading 'teh Z0mG fre3 screan saviorz lolz' on a user account with admin privileges.

Kapersky and Avir are both great in my book; Avir gets the vote because it's free, low on system resources and has a very high detection rate.

Avir: "It's new, it's german, it's extra tough!!"

You can't go wrong with either NOD32, Avir or Kapersky. All of them are much better than Norton's bloatware.

I like NOD32.

I've seen too many people get viruses when they were using Symantec Coorperate which our school gives out for free...

Same here. I've only used Norton and Avast!, so that's my experience. I love Avast! compared to Norton.

Norton  sucks.
