Best android tablet

Currently I'm a second year computer science student in college and am very new to the tablet world. I have a droid phone so am interested in keeping in android. As I start to look into the different tablets they all seem very similar. The Toshiba and Motorola both caught my eye but I can't decide which is the better tablet. Also I heard there will be amazon one in the future and was wondering if they might be worth waiting for.

Toshiba Thrive or Asus Transformer. Currently using my Thrive, going to post a written review and probably a video review soon. The Amazon one is very interesting, and possibly worth waiting for if there was more information.

Poor newb doesnt know what he started.
I think that Best is what suits your needs. Will you be typing lots of notes on it during class? Cuz for that I'd recommend a laptop or the Transformer.

Will you be playing games or watching lots of HD movies? I believe the Xoom is your best choice.

As a computer science student I take a lot of math notes so having a stylus option would be very good. I plan to do a mix of movies and games. I don't know if that would change anything?

A stylus option is nothing more than paying a couple extra bucks for a capacitive stylus that works with the capacitive touch screen.

I would rank the android tablets in the following order

Galaxy Tab 10.1 > Transformer > Thrive > Iconia > Xoom

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has the best screen and is the thinnest and lightest while the Asus Transformer is thinker and heavier but costs $100 less and can be converted into a netbook with the optional keyboard dock.

The Thrive and Iconia are ok but they aren't as nice as the first two and as far as I am concerned the Xoom has no redeeming qualities.

Really? The Tab 10.1 is taking a lot of heat for having a half baked build, lots of browser crashing and looping being reported at XDA. The Tab feels like it has decent build quality, for a Samsung though. Be warned though, it lacks an sd card slot and will be getting TouchWiz(gag!) in an upcoming update.

I haven't handled a Thrive yet, going to go that soon, but I'd put the Iconia on the bottom. The Xoom is a far better device than the Acer, its major downside seems to be the mounting the sd card bug, fixed in 3.1 for European Xooms and in 3.2 for US Xooms. I don't understand the flak the Xoom takes for allegedly having a bad screen, when the iPad gets praised for having a good screen because the two devices put up similar numbers in brightness and blanks.

From what I could tell, the Tab 10.1, Transformer, and Xoom all had comparable screens when I checked them out with some light web browsing and YouTube videos.

Anyone considering a tablet though, really has to go put hands on the actual product before they buy one.

You can put up numbers all day, but as much as I hate Apple, the iPad 2 has a beautiful screen. The Transformer is just as good however, and really hard to beat either. The Galaxy 10.1 is a good display, all better than the Xoom's. The Xoom screen just doesn't look as bright and there is not as much clarity. It is nice, but not as nice as the other three.

Look at the HTC Flyer, it has the best stylus support.

Several reviews have called the Tab 10.1 the first real iPad killer and from my brief interaction with the tablets I would agree. The SD slot isn't an issue for me but i can see why other people would care about it.

The Thrive, Xoom, and Iconia do not have IPS screens which means they will have terrible viewing angles compared to the Transformer (IPS) and the Galaxy Tab (Super PLS). Because you will ralely be viewing a tablet at a perfect angle IMO an IPS screen or equivalent is a must.

My issue with the Xoom is it has no real advantages compared to the other tablets. It doesn't have the best screen, it isn't the lightest, thinnest or cheapest and it dosn't have any special extras like the Transformer's dock or the Thrive's usb support.

The HTC Flyer is the real oddball in my opinion. I find it's stylus integration very appealing for taking notes but everything else about the tablet is lacking compared to it's honeycomb competitors. If it was $350 or so I think it could be a great budget option though.

I went into BestBuy and played with the Asus Transformer for a goodbit. I had high expectations and was underwhelmed. It kept on locking up for between 10 seconds and 3 minutes. It really gave off the impression that it's still in Beta testing. The Xoom didn't glitch out like that, but wasn't as smooth either. Webpages seemed to take longer to load (not sure if it was on Wifi or 4G).

I hate saying this, because I really don't like Apple, but based on my experience in the store, the iPad2 was a much better tablet. I really wanted to like an Android tablet more, but I'd be lying to say I'd get one over an iPad2 (I have an HTC Thunderbolt btw and am Android biased). That being said, I'm waiting on higher resolution screens before buying either, hopefully Android catches up by then, because like you, I'd like to stick with the same platform as my phone.

The lack of a micro-HDMI out port is an even bigger deal to me. I use it on my Evo all the time. Not quite sure what they were thinking there.

I heard rumblings of that at some point I believe. It's still absolutely retarded though. Just one more thing to carry around when I already have a micro-HDMI cable. I'm sure they'll charge a ridiculous premium for their proprietary crap too.
