I currently have a gigabyte hsf and it worked great for a while, but now it makes a loud buzzing sound and its extremely annoying.
i have an athlon 64 3400+ (socket 939)
what would be the best HSF to keep it cool but still be quiet. I work from home, and its so annoying to hear this buzzing all day.

I personally use a Zalman 7700-Cu (120mm)it's a little big but its very quiet, and with the provided Fanmate 2 controller you can set the speed to low during idle and high during gaming or what not. If you find it a little too big you could probably use the Zalman 7000B-Cu (92mm) and I wold be its just as quiet.

The Thermalright SI-120 is one of my all time favorite HS.
* It's taller than the XP-120.
* By being taller it allows a good quiet fan to wash the whole area around the socket with airflow.

Well, is the fan on your HSF replaceable? That would certainly be the least expensive route.

If you want to go cheap you can grab an Arctic Freezer 64 pro for $20. Very quiet, not silent though-- and great temps.

I've liked the Scythe Ninja heatsinks. I ran my Athlon 64 x2 3800+ overclocked to 2.4GHz for nearly two years (until my recent upgrade) with that heatsink... passively! Well, it is cooled by the rear case fan, but it worked great. Mine's an older one with different mounting but the newer ones have mounting to work on socket 754, 939, 940, AM2 and LGA775 so this is one unit that is a keeper for your next upgrade.

I had put a Zalman 7700AlCu in my wife's system (before upgrade) and it worked fine also, as long as I kept fan speed down. Running at full speed the fan noise was very noticeable. That Zalman heatsink also would not fit my motherboard, which is why it went in her system.

The Thermalright HR-01 and HR-01 Plus CPU coolers can be run passively, can't get much quieter than that, at least that's what their web page says!

Noctua or Coolink are quiet and cool very well..

The new Coolink is a bit large and not compatible with larger Northbridge heatsinks, but there is a new revision out or coming out shortly that address the problem..
