hello all

i think 16 GB is more than enough for the primary drive (OS/apps). data files and applications thats are not used frequently can be installed in a normal 320/500 GB secondary drive. i dont know why so many people are not doing this as it seems cheap enough for <$900 PCs

also do you think this setup can be done with a normal laptop (primary mini-pci ssd and normal secondary 2.5 drive

OCZ Agility 64GB is/will be $160.

I've been thinking along the same lines as you have, wrt to getting an expresscard SSD. At this point, there aren't any usable SSDs that are in that form factor. It really does seem to be the best option though.

No such thing. The smallest Indilinx based drive that I know of is the 64GB Agility. Everything below $100 is using JMICRON controllers, which will be the opposite of fast.

let me get this right: 64GB is the smallest available size with decent performance ?

if thats the case then my idea isnt very feasible as $160 is too much money to pay on storage for a cheap system

question: will all laptops that have pcie have no problem booting the OS from the pcie drive

most indilinx based drives are indeed 64GB and up. But there are some that are 32GB AFAIK. The ultradrive ME has a 32GB version.

Honestly, I'd take the ultradrive over the OCZ anyways.

interesting comment about the drive I linked in newegg:
Lastly, it will shutter, but only under specific conditions. When the drive is ~95% full, the latency skyrockets from 0.03ms to 90ms. If you want to use the drive, understand the technology. Again, not for the lazy user. Under all other conditions, even after filling and removing data, shuttering doesn't happen.

I think I heard about that before... something about stuttering if almost full...

What OS are you gonna run on this drive? 32GB is way to small for anything but windows XP, and if that is the case, then you need to MANUALLY align the partitions.

you realize that the chips they buy come in a size. the number of channels is proportional to the number of chips. so if you have 16gb versus 128gb you have a much slower ssd.

ever wonder why you never see 30gb benchmarks/reviews on OCZ Vertex? only the 120(8) gb version?

I have the 30GB OCZ Vertex, and while it may be slower than the bigger versions it's still light years ahead of any hard drive I've had before, Raptors included.

If you're using XP, 30GB is plenty for quite a lot of games - a slim XP install with all patches is no more than 3GB, or probably less if you try hard. Vista on the other hand would (from experience) eat up about half the drive by default, but this can be slimmed down by reducing swapfile size and restore point storage.

If you can afford to put in a second old-fashioned hard disk for a bit more storage space, it's plenty - swapfiles and such can be moved to the 2nd drive.

I was thinking about getting an SSD for my boot drive and leaving the rest for media/secondary applications. 16/32 gb just isnt' enough using Vista/7 along with any other programs you'll use on a regular basis (office, mainstay games, etc) and any 60+ gb model gives you more than enough storage. The prices should be coming down due to intel's new offerings. Better to get a good drive now rather than a shitty one, realize it's shitty, then try and replace it. Measure twice, cut once.

come on people 32 is plenty even for win7 with all the applications that i use on regular basis. a friend has been using winXP+office +other apps just fone on his eeepc 700 with only 4GB+8gb SD card for data files. feel free to recommend a good 32gb SSD drive

do most laptops have the ability to boot from pcie slot?
