Best Amd XP / mobo combo?

I've decided I'm going to spend some of my bonus on me this year and build a new game box.

I currently have a Gateway Select 1000 with an AMD 1.0ghz CPU and will give that to wife for her college work. This was the first machine I didn't build myself in years because I just wanted something simple and fast to get back into gaming.

To the point, I'm going top-notch and want the best of the best in gaming PC's.

I've decided on the AMD 1900 or 2000, depending on the best deal I can find. The CPU decision is pretty easy but I want your opinions on the best motherboard and memory to pair it up with. I don't need integrated video or sound as I've got a Ti200 and an SB Live Gamer.

So hit me with your expert advice and I'll put up a website soon to document my selection process, case modding and system build.

Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to AT Thrashman! I have the Epox 8k7a but it appears that the new big dog Epox is the 8KHA+. Seems to be the board of choice at the moment. Epox boards, to me at least, are fast reliable boards that are good overclockers. I would recommend the Alpha PAL8045 HS with a nice low speed quiet fan like the panaflo or the enermax. Happy building!

Shuttle AK31 V3 running fine with XP1600. Onboard sound (which you don`t need) and USB, but no onboard modem or LAN (which you might need?)
Easy setup (no jumpers to set) and BIOS detected everything fine. Very happy.

Epox 8KHA+, just be sure to use an antec 400 w. power supply, or any other amd approved PS. Ia'm using corsair ram with good results, pc2100 cas 2. max ram settings

I use the ak31, and it works great. Newegg is a great place to order your stuff, and if you act fast, you can get a refurbished ak31 for only $59 with free shipping.

There are 2 groups of KT266A boards. One group consists of no-thrills, but great overclocking options. These boards are at or under $100. The other group, hit's around $150 and adds features like RAID, Sound, on-board USB 2.0 on some, and other features. So I'd look at the options avialable and if u want the goodies, then go right ahead and get one of the $150 ones. If u don't need the extra features then just go get a EPox 8KHA+. It's solid, cheap, and stable. Good luck!

Check out my rig. I just finished it in december, Thanks to anandtech deals everything listed was about $1000. after all rebates.
I have epox 8kha+ amd 1900+xp.

You know my answer 🙂 my Epox 8KHA+ and XP 1700+ have given me no problems I game alot so have been putting them through the paces one very stable board and very easy to setup only one jumper to worry about (100/133fsb).

🙂

Man if you hit the wrong button your rig is toast. I will re edit my rig , It is gone right now and I have to go some where. Please check back late today and let me know what you think. I researched alot to build it. I hope you know I mean "my rig" as the description of my rig, Not my actual mobo and chip got toasted or deleted. The epox 8kha+ is excellent!
